Foreign firms’ share of Georgia investment falls in record year overall

Trevor Williams reports, Georgia marks a record year with $26.3 billion in pledged investment, the share of the total coming from international companies has decreased in comparison to recent years. Of the 23,200 new private-sector jobs announced by companies in the state in the year ended June 30, some 6,500 (about 28 percent) came from companies headquartered in places like Canada, South Korea and Japan, the top three, according to a news release from Gov. Brian Kemp‘s office.

Metro Atlanta consumers grapple with higher prices on food, other goods

Amy Wenk reports, the price of coffee has jumped more than 20% from a year ago. Ground beef is up nearly 13%, and apples almost 10%, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. With prices up on many food items, Rachael Auld says she has to shop around. The Belvedere Park resident hunts for deals at different grocery stores, picks produce at farmers markets and uses a delivery service for pricier cuts of meat.

Cobb authority advances tax breaks for $140M Home Depot expansion

Isabelle Manders reports, in an effort to bring “thousands of workers” back into the office, The Home Depot is seeking help from the Development Authority of Cobb County to finance a major expansion and improvements across its three Cobb campuses. The authority signaled its willingness to consider the company’s request for $140 million in bonds by passing an inducement resolution Tuesday.

Rural Georgia hospital plans to close its labor and delivery unit, in part due to Medicaid cuts

Maya Homan reports that St. Mary’s Sacred Heart Hospital in rural northeast Georgia will discontinue its maternal health services next month as its parent company moves to consolidate OB/GYN services to one location, the hospital announced last week. The decision will affect the hospital’s labor and delivery unit as well as Clear Creek OBGYN, a separate center which provides reproductive care for patients at all stages of life.

Piedmont Athens Regional plans $56 million upgrade on operating room services

Wayne Ford reports that Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center announced this week it has broken ground for a $56 million expansion and modernization of its operating room and surgical services. The expansion begins with the construction of two new operating rooms and a hybrid operating room, which will provide a unit for complex vascular surgery.

Terry Dickson reports that the Supreme Court of Georgia declined Tuesday to hear an appeal of a lower court ruling that Brunswick could not be sued for the removal five years ago of a Confederate monument from Hanover Square. The affirmation of a Glynn County Superior Court judge’s decision in the second suit filed to have the statue restored likely lays the matter to rest.

Georgia higher ed board approves $50K Sonny Perdue pay bump

Ross Williams reports that University System of Georgia Chancellor Sonny Perdue is getting a raise. The Board of Regents voted unanimously Tuesday to approve a $50,000 pay raise for the former Georgia governor and U.S. agriculture secretary, bringing Perdue’s pay up to $572,500.
