Georgia transport companies face rising expenses as diesel prices surge 33%
Annie Mapp reports, rising fuel prices are putting new financial pressure on Georgia trucking companies as diesel costs continue to climb. The national average for a gallon of gas has climbed back to about $4, up 13 cents from a week ago, while diesel prices are approaching $5 a gallon, according to AAA.

Liberty County: A Celebration of Liberty
Betty Darby reports, when the nation celebrates its 250th anniversary this month, perhaps Georgia’s share of the cheers will be a little louder in Liberty County. After all, three of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence were from Georgia, and two of them – Button Gwinnett and Lyman Hall – lived in Liberty County.

Sandy Springs committee identifies housing affordability and parks as key priorities
Hayden Sumlin reports, the Sandy Springs Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee met for a second time on July 20, modifying some goals in the 2017 plan and identifying new priorities, like a community recreation center and increased path connectivity. Sukirti Ghosh, an urban designer and principal with Rhodeside & Harwell who is leading the city’s consultant team, said hundreds of comments from citizens have been documented at community events in recent months.

It’s decision time for the Okefenokee Swamp’s proposed World Heritage designation
Ross Williams reports, Georgia’s Okefenokee Swamp could soon be elevated to the same level as Yellowstone National Park, the fjords of Norway or Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s World Heritage Committee is meeting this week in Busan, South Korea, with an agenda that includes deciding whether to add the 400,000-acre Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge to its list of World Heritage sites.

Susie King Taylor Museum, Freedom Park added to National Park Service network
Robin Kemp reports, the National Park Service says it has added the Susie King Taylor Museum in downtown Hinesville and the Susie King Taylor Freedom Park at Jones Creek in Midway to its Reconstruction Era National Historic Network of over 100 sites. The addition puts Liberty County’s Taylor-related sites in the same league as Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Philadelphia and the Center for Civil Rights History and Research at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, S.C., which also were added to the national network Tuesday.

Agencies in charge of Medicaid, insurance, hospitals, infectious diseases and mental health treatments take up a sizable chunk of Georgia’s taxpayer-funded budget, totaling about $32.9 billion of the state’s $76.5 billion budget with state and federal funds.

New Canada tariffs could fuel tensions in Georgia governor’s race
Greg Bluestein, Tia Mitchell, Patricia Murphy and Adam Beam report, President Donald Trump ignited a likely clash with one of the nation’s largest trading partners Monday by ordering 50% tariffs on a range of Canadian goods — a move that quickly reverberated in Georgia’s race for governor. Democratic nominee Keisha Lance Bottoms called the tariffs “nothing more than a tax on Georgia families and businesses.”
