Hyundai is bringing jobs to Savannah. So are Hyundai suppliers. Here is who is coming.

Latrice Williams reports, Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America opened in October and while production has begun, HMGMA will need a host of suppliers to help manufacture auto parts for electric vehicles that will be assembled at the plant. The facility, announced in May 2022, is the largest economic development project in Georgia history, representing a $5.5 billion investment and promising 8,500 jobs.

Preserving Black History

Keith Stagno reports, as a Black man born in 1936, historian James “Jack” Hadley lived through the Jim Crow era and is now on a mission to preserve a Black-friendly landmark. Thomasville’s Imperial Hotel was listed in The Negro Motorist’s Green Book and later The Negro Traveler’s Green Book, the annual travel guide published from 1936 – 1967 that featured hotels, restaurants and other places that welcomed Black travelers when segregation was widespread.

Rivian poised to get $6B federal loan to build Georgia factory

Zachary Hansen and Drew Kann report that the U.S. Department of Energy on Tuesday announced it expects to award electric vehicle startup Rivian a nearly $6 billion loan to start construction of its long-promised factory in Georgia, a significant step that paves the way for the stalled project to come to fruition. The Department of Energy’s Loan Programs Office said the loan commitment, which is subject to final approval, will provide Rivian with the financial backing to build its plant in southern Morgan and Walton counties, roughly an hour east of Atlanta along I-20.

Abu Dhabi to Atlanta: Etihad to Add Hartsfield-Jackson to Route Map Next Summer 

Trevor Williams reports that Atlanta is among the 10 new international cities that Middle Eastern carrier Etihad Airways is set to add to its route map next summer with new nonstop flights. The national carrier of the United Arab Emirates will begin flights between Abu Dhabi and Atlanta on July 2, starting four times weekly.

Recovery efforts for threatened woodpecker species have worked, but Helene nearly stalled it

Erica Van Buren reports that the red-cockaded woodpecker was recently downgraded from endangered to threatened, but that doesn’t mean it’s out of the woods. “Last month the red-cockaded woodpecker was listed as threatened,” said Joe Burnam, wildlife biologist with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

Whitfield County receives transportation planning grant

It is part of some $5 million in safety funding for Georgia jointly announced by the state’s two Democratic U.S. senators, Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock, as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

State-run hurricane damage relief program taking applications

The application period for the SAFETY 24 Hurricane Helene Relief Loan Program, a partnership of the agriculture agency and the Georgia Development Authority, opened on Friday on a first come, first served basis.
