Georgia jobless rate holds steady
Dave Williams reports that Georgia’s unemployment rate was 3.6% last month for the third month in a row, the state Department of Labor reported Thursday. The state’s labor force rose by 1,370 in October to a record-high 5.4 million, while the number of employed Georgians increased slightly to another all-time high of 5.2 million.

Savannah container volumes up 10 percent in October
Staff reports that the Georgia Ports Authority handled 494,261 twenty-foot equivalent container units in October, an increase of more than 45,000 TEUs, up 10 percent. It was the third busiest October on record for GPA after 2021 and 2022, when more than half a million TEUs crossed the docks at the Port of Savannah.

Brunswick port sees 10% increase in cargo traffic
Taylor Cooper reports that the Port of Brunswick is processing cargo at a faster rate than last year — total cargo traffic is up 10.6% from the same time last fiscal year, the Georgia Ports Authority announced Thursday. In vehicles and heavy machinery, Colonel’s Island handled 68,569 units of roll-on, roll-off cargo in October and 300,647 units fiscal year-to-date, 10.6% over the fiscal year 2024.

Here’s how Augusta Regional Airport intends to spend its newest $4 million federal grant

The grant will pay partly for an expansion of the airport’s passenger security checkpoint, which the airport’s executive director hopes will be finished before the 2026 Masters Tournament, the airport recently announced.

State Board of Regents approve awarding of medical degrees at UGA School of Medicine
Wayne Ford reports that the University System of Georgia Board of Regents on Tuesday approved a measure to allow the University of Georgia School of Medicine to grant a Doctor of Medicine degree, according to a release from UGA. The UGA School of Medicine was established in February and is located on the medical campus off Prince Avenue.

State panel steering Georgia opioid settlement money recommends initial round of projects
Jill Nolin reports that a state panel has made its recommendations for how the first round of funding from a major $638 million settlement with opioid manufacturers and distributors should be spent, backing a wide range of projects. The Georgia Opioid Settlement Advisory Commission approved a total of $44.4 million Thursday for 130 projects as part of the first year of a two-decade-long program.
