Unofficial Guide Issue 09.22: Eat, Visit, Do, and Shop
Apple cider donuts, library cards, Oktoberfest, and festival season.
Happy first day of Fall. Hopefully the universe will get the message that it’s here, and will gift us some cooler weather going forward. I’m longing for blankets and fire pits and hearty soups, for sure! Here are some things to get you started on your Fall
Eat: I’m a sucker for donuts. Also, for apples. Same goes for powdered sugar and cinnamon. So for the best apple cider donuts, hit Mercier Orchards in Blue Ridge. If donuts aren’t your thing, there are plenty of bakery and market goodies for you to enjoy. Take the family and enjoy a beautiful day at the orchards.
Visit: Your local library. Do you have a library card? When is the last time you’ve been to one (other than maybe to vote)? Besides physical books, you can also check out audiobooks, e-books, and even passes to parks and museums. Find your local library and how to get hooked up with a new library card here.
Do: If you can’t go to Oktoberfest in Germany, the next best thing is Oktoberfest in Helen. It runs through November 1 and can be just a day trip (as long as you have a designated driver, obviously). And if you can’t make it to Helen, so many communities across the state have their own celebrations. You can find those here.
Shop: Shop Local! Shop Small! I know, it’s too early to think about the holidays, but then again, it’s not. Especially when there are festivals all over the state nearly every weekend in the Fall. Small makers and artisans show their wares at local festivals and markets. For most, this is their full time job. Know where your gifts are coming from, and know they’re made with love and care right in your neighborhood. Find festivals and markets here and here.
