Gov. Kemp Announces Expanded Vaccine Eligibility Starting March 15
Staff reports that Governor Brian P. Kemp announced on Wednesday expanded eligibility for COVID-19 vaccinations. On March 15, vaccination criteria will expand to include Georgians aged 55 and older and individuals with disabilities and certain medical conditions.

East West Manufacturing Expands to Canada With Montreal Acquisition
Trevor Williams reports that Atlanta-based East West Manufacturing, which got its start 20 years ago sourcing from Asia, continued its expansion in the Americas this week with its first Canadian acquisition. East West announced Wednesday that it purchased Varitron Inc., which makes electronics including circuit-board and box-build assemblies across four facilities around Montreal, including a research center in Mirabel.

Georgia’s tax collections are up, but there’s a catch

DeAnn Komanecky reports that Savannah is the nation’s top location for new industry and other job creating development, according to an economic development trade publication. The annual ranking by Site Selection magazine ranked Savannah as the top metro area based on total projects with a population range of 200,000 to one million — tied with Toledo, Ohio — and the No. 1 top metro for projects per capita.

Second Amazon Center coming to Columbia County
Joe Hotchkiss reports that retail giant Amazon has purchased land to build a second facility in Columbia County, less than a year after announcing the construction of a 600,000-square-foot distribution center. Financial details of the deal were not immediately disclosed.

Foundation grant aimed at medical billing, debt in Southwest Georgia
Dave Williams reports that community groups and health-care providers in Southwest Georgia will get help addressing problems with medical billing and debt thanks to a $190,000 grant, Atlanta-based consumer advocacy group Georgia Watch announced Wednesday. The grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation will let Georgia Watch work with two other nonprofits – Georgians for a Healthy Future and SOWEGA Rising – to help hospitals in the region improve their billing and collections practices.

Valdosta could lose metro status
Terry Richards reports that proposed changes in federal policy may strip Valdosta of its status as a metropolitan city but local officials say this doesn’t spell doom. Valdosta and the surrounding area was officially declared a Metropolitan Statistical Area in 2005, based largely on numbers culled from the 2000 census.

General Assembly approves pay increase for 10 Georgia sheriffs
Nyamekye Daniel reports that the Georgia Senate unanimously approved a bill Wednesday that would increase pay for local sheriffs left out of legislation approved in 2019. House Bill 129 would increase the minimum annual salary for sheriffs serving in a county with 39,000 to 49,999 residents.

Top Georgia Republicans rip strings attached to coronavirus relief aid
Jill Nolin reports that high-ranking GOP state officials are objecting to a provision in the $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief bill that blocks them from using the federal funds to pay for tax breaks. The sweeping relief measure, which includes a $1,400 direct checks for many Americans, is on its way to President Joe Biden’s desk after getting final approval Wednesday from Congress.
