State unemployment rate rose across Georgia in January

Gordon Jackson reports that Georgia’s unemployment rate in January rose in all 12 regional commissions. Officials with the Georgia Department of Labor said the increase across the state reflects historical patterns because many seasonal and holiday-related jobs have come to an end.

Arthur Blank’s women’s soccer club will return to Marietta council

Hunter Riggall reports  that Arthur Blank’s professional women’s soccer club has submitted site plans for its planned headquarters to the city of Marietta, and the City Council is set to vote on a rezoning next week. The plans call for a 38,000-square-foot training headquarters, surface parking lots, two full-sized soccer fields and two smaller, U12 size fields for use by youth organizations.

Uzbekistan Confirms Atlanta as World Cup Base 

Trevor Williams reports that Uzbekistan’s national soccer team has selected Atlanta as its FIFA World Cup base, confirming earlier news reports that the team from Central Asia’s most populous nation would land here. The team will reportedly set up at Atlanta United’s Children’s Healthcare training ground in Marietta, becoming the first squad with one of the eight scheduled matches at Mercedes-Benz Stadium to also choose metro Atlanta as its headquarters for the duration of the tournament.

Rome to hold public hearing on COAM waiver

Diane Wagner reports, Rome City Commission is expected to decide Monday on a waiver for coin-operated amusement machines, following a public hearing on the issue. The Stop N Go at 400 Calhoun Ave. is located between a home and a church and cannot meet the distance requirements for a license to operate ding-dings within the city limits.

Tybee Island’s sand loss threatens sea turtle nesting

Jillian Magtoto reports that Tybee Island beaches have experienced a 60% loss in sand since the last beach renourishment funded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 2020, according to Tybee Island Mayor Bryan West in a press conference. This year, another renourishment was planned again, until the city learned the funding was cancelled on Monday.

Legal challenge targets Fitz Johnson’s PSC residency

Mary Landers reports, Republican Fitz Johnson is facing a residency challenge to his effort to reclaim his seat on the Public Service Commission. In a complaint filed with the Secretary of State in March, Daniel O’Toole alleged Johnson’s legal residence is in Cobb County, which is outside the boundaries of the District 3 seat Johnson is seeking.
