Timber merger brings HQ to Atlanta, creates Georgia’s largest private landowner
Amy Wenk reports that a deal to merge two U.S. timberland giants will bring a new corporate headquarters to Atlanta and form the state’s largest private landowner. Two real estate investment trusts, Florida-based Rayonier and Washington state-based PotlatchDeltic, said Tuesday they’ve entered into an agreement to combine in a deal valued at $8.2 billion, including net debt.

A new e-commerce player based in South Hall has started operations
Jeff Gill reports that a 150,000-square-foot Oakwood warehouse has become a regional e-commerce distributor for a New York City-based logistics company. Veho opened the facility at 4020 Falcon Parkway/Ga. 13 north of H.F. Reed Industrial Parkway/Martin Road this summer, moving from a smaller location in Lawrenceville.

Interim president named for Valdosta State University
Ty Tagami reports that William R. “Bill” Crowe, a longtime college administrator with experience at the University of Georgia and at public colleges in several other states, will take over as the interim president of Valdosta State University in January. University System of Georgia Chancellor Sonny Perdue named Crowe as the temporary successor of President Richard Carvajal on Tuesday.

Tourism project development on county agenda
Gordon Jackson reports that the Glynn County Commission will appoint fellow board members to serve on the newly formed Joint Tourism Product Development Steering Committee at Thursday’s meeting. The creation of a steering committee is the result of an agreement between the county and Golden Isles Convention and Visitors Bureau to increase the bed tax by 2% effective July 1.

Maya Homan reports, public health experts in Georgia are speaking out against furloughs at the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention they say have left hundreds of employees at the agency unemployed as the federal government shutdown enters its third week. Federal employees began receiving reduction-in-force notices, the technical name for layoffs, on Friday.

Speaking at a luncheon at a St. Simons restaurant sponsored by the Golden Isles Republican Women, the one-term congressman from Jackson in rural Butts County panned Ossoff as a “trust fund kid” who “never had a real job in his life.”
