New area code coming to southeastern Georgia
Dave Williams reports that Georgia will be getting an 11th area code soon, with the new 565 area code being added as an overlay to the existing 912 area code in the southeastern part of the state, the Georgia Public Service Commission announced Tuesday. Once new phone numbers for the 912 area code have been exhausted, some new users will be assigned the 565 area code. x

Christy Simo reports, Flock Safety, which provides security technology such as cameras and license plate readers, is opening a 97,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Cobb County. The $10 million investment will create some 210 jobs over the next three years.

Georgia Tech’s next innovation district more ‘creative’ than first two
Savannah Sicurella reports, after launching innovation districts for life sciences and technology, Georgia Tech is turning its focus to the state’s creative industries. The university has announced plans to transform 8 acres of space along North Avenue and Marietta Street into what it calls “Creative Quarter,” a hub where new technologies for producing art are developed, shared and experimented with, according to a news release from the university.

Columbus State gets OK for $22.2 million robotics and space science center
Mark Rice reports that construction of the first state-funded new building in more than 20 years at Columbus State University has been approved. It will result in the relocation and expansion of CSU’s 29-year-old Coca-Cola Space Science Center, extending its scope to comprise robotics engineering in collaboration with the Muscogee County School District and Fort Benning.

Twyman Installed As 63rd President Of State Bar Of Georgia
Adam Carey reports that Christopher P. Twyman of Cox Byington Twyman LLP in Rome was installed as the 63rd president of the 55,000-member State Bar of Georgia during their annual meeting in Ponte Vendra, Florida. Twyman previously served as secretary, treasurer and, for the last year, president-elect of the state bar.

Gwinnett County Public Library gets $350,000 grant from Carnegie Corporation
Staff reports that one of the oldest philanthropies in the United States gave the Gwinnett County Public Library (GCPL) a major grant. According to the library system, the Carnegie Corporation of New York awarded $350,000, which they plan to use for expanding English language classes, in partnership with Gwinnett County Public Schools.

A Spending Problem’: Cobb Commissioner Blasts Sheriff Over Jail Maintenance Costs
Isabelle Manders reports, after an over $1.7 million request from the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday, Republican Commissioner Keli Gambrill called out Democratic Sheriff Craig Owens and other elected officials for not being “as respectful to the county budget as others.” The Board of Commissioners voted 4-0, with Chair Lisa Cupid absent, authorizing the sheriff’s office to replace the nearly 40-year-old equipment circulating air in the Cobb Adult Detention Center’s infirmary.

Clayton BOC Approves $4 Million For Food And Medical At Jail
Anthony Rhoades reports, at its Tuesday, June 3 meeting, the Clayton County Board of Commissioners approved about $4 million to pay for food and medical expenses at the Clayton County Jail through the end of the fiscal year. The original request was for more than $8.402 million — including jail, medical, personnel and other expenses for the remainder of the fiscal year, which ends June 30.

CDC supporters continue to rally for public health months after mass layoffs began
Amber Roldan reports that every Tuesday afternoon since mid-February, the busy intersection outside the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention becomes loud and crowded as allies show their support for the center and its remaining employees. The rallies emerged after the first round of mass layoffs under the Trump administration and its campaign to shrink the size of the federal government, which has led to a large number of fired employees, funding cuts and the elimination of CDC programs.

Georgia Supreme Court invalidates four State Election Board rules
Sam Gringlas reports that the Georgia Supreme Court invalidated four of seven controversial rules passed by the Georgia State Election Board in the weeks before the 2024 election. Among the rules struck down Tuesday by the state high court: two measures that critics argued could result in local election board members refusing to certify election results and another that mandated hand counting the number of ballots after the close of polls.

Judge rules against Democrat running for Public Service Commission
Ty Tagami reports that a Democrat running for the Georgia Public Service Commission failed Tuesday to convince a judge to let him stay on the ballot after Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger ruled that he did not live in the district where he was running. Daniel Blackman was among four Democrats running in the June 17 primary for the District 3 PSC seat currently held by Republican Fitz Johnson.

A big election with a tiny turnout: Few voters show up for Georgia PSC primary
Mark Niesse reports, turnout is so low in Georgia’s rescheduled, off-year, summertime elections for Public Service Commission that several counties are considering closing polling places if there’s a runoff. Voters are showing little interest in a primary election that could have tremendous impact on their wallets: The PSC sets the power and gas rates that monopoly utility companies can charge.
