Miguel Legoas reports that Georgia is home to some of the best businesses in America, according to a study by U.S. News & World Report. While “best” can be subjective, U.S. News identified these businesses based on multiple factors such as quality of pay, benefits, stability, comfort, opportunities for development, and flexibility.

As development looms, residents worry conserving Pine Log is a ‘pipe dream’

Zachary Hansen reports, for decades, the 14,000-acre Pine Log Wildlife Management Area drew nature lovers to Bartow County. On Monday, a plan to mine 500 acres of it drew hundreds to the Cartersville courthouse in opposition to the proposed quarry, with many also opposed to broader plans to develop the land into housing, retail, offices and industrial space.

Gov. Kemp Announces Unified High Demand Career List to Strengthen Georgia Workforce Development

Staff reports that Gov. Kemp, on Tuesday, announced the State Workforce Development Board has officially approved Georgia’s High Demand Career List, a tool designed to align education, training, and workforce development efforts with the needs of employers across the state. The High Demand Career List is a component of the Governor’s Top State for Talent initiative, which will parallel Georgia’s development as the top state in which to do business.

Data Center Planned for 114 Acres Behind Coosa High School

John Bailey reports that a second data center project is planned for Floyd County, this time on property behind Coosa High School, and it’s likely not the last. The Rome-Floyd County Development Authority, acting as a go between for the Floyd County Board of Education and a developer, approved on Tuesday an option on 114 acres of property at $40,000 an acre.

County, Cities Meeting Wednesday to Talk New Tax Option

Annie Mayne reports that the Cobb County Board of Commissioners has scheduled a specially-called meeting to discuss the ramifications of a new property tax law with the leaders of the county’s municipalities. Passed by the Georgia General Assembly in the spring and overwhelmingly approved by voters on Nov. 5, House Bill 581 brings significant changes to property and local tax systems across the Peach State.

Georgia Senate panel urges state prisons to focus on mental health, feds to ban cellphones

Ross Williams reports that the Senate Supporting Safety and Welfare of All Individuals in Department of Corrections Facilities Study Committee approved a list of recommendations last week they intend to help improve conditions for people inside Georgia’s prison walls. Recommendations can be formed into legislation that the state Legislature can move forward once lawmakers reconvene in January.

Federal prosecutors file suit against Brunswick for attempts to close The Well

Jabari Gibbs reports that federal civil rights prosecutors have filed a complaint against Brunswick to stop the city’s ongoing battle to shut the downtown homeless shelter called The Well, saying the pressure is a violation of religious freedom.

Georgia Republican electors formally certify Trump’s victory

Dave Williams reports that Georgia’s Republican presidential electors formally cast their votes for former President Donald Trump Tuesday in a ceremony at the state Capitol. The 16 electors, consistently largely of local GOP leaders, met on the same day electors in every state cast their votes either for Trump or Vice President Kamala Harris, depending on which candidate the majority of voters in their state supported on Election Day last month.

Georgia U.S. Rep. David Scott loses House Ag Committee post as Dems shuffle leadership

Stanley Dunlap reports that Georgia U.S. Rep. David Scott of Atlanta will no longer be the ranking member of the House Agriculture Committee following the House Democratic Caucus’ vote Tuesday to appoint Minnesota Rep. Angie Craig to the position. Craig, who is entering her fourth term, was one of three House Democrats to be awarded leadership positions Tuesday, completing a post-election shakeup that saw some longtime lawmakers ousted.
