Savannah has shelter for flood victims, warns of increased flooding up to 12 inches

Joseph Schwartzburg reports that as of 3 p.m. Saturday, the City of Savannah released more information concerning rising flood waters due to the Ogeechee River spilling over its banks. The latest notice stated that the city’s “stormwater modeling indicates that street flooding in the Bradley Point and Villages of Vallambrosia area is likely to increase by up to another 12 inches before water levels begin to recede.”

Dylan Jackson reports that the company linked to the controversial plan to operate a titanium mine near the edge of the Okefenokee Swamp is behind on hundreds of thousands of dollars in personal property taxes owed to the South Georgia county where the mine would be built, local tax records show. Twin Pines Minerals owes Charlton County $365,000 in taxes, including $55,000 in penalties and interest, county records show.

Amazon facility set to open by early fall

David Herron reports that Amazon is set to open its Cassville White Road facility in just a short amount of time as Bartow continues to bring in more business. “Amazon’s 1 million-square-foot facility … is scheduled to open in late summer/early fall and will create hundreds of jobs,” Greg Rios, an Amazon spokesperson said, about the site, which is north of downtown Cartersville.

Archer Aviation announces manufacturing relationship with Stellantis worth $400 million

Evan Newton reports, key terms for a manufacturing deal between aircraft company Archer Aviation and automaker Stellantis have been announced. According to Archer Aviation’s Q2 2024 newsletter released on Aug. 8, Stellantis will contribute up to $400 million that will assist in covering manufacturing labor costs and certain capital expenditures as Archer’s new facility in Covington.

The site’s new “GRAD Select” status provides an additional seal of approval that makes it especially attractive for future industrial development.

Charles Oliver reports that Whitfield County Tax Commissioner Danny Sane has told other county officials that the preliminary tax digest prepared by the county assessors office “caused me grave concern.” “Even though the average values of our commercial and industrial properties had increased, the assessors had dramatically reduced more than 800 of our commercial and industrial accounts by more than $50,000,” he wrote in a letter to the Board of Assessors and other officials.
