Georgia Milestones test scores show post-pandemic improvement

Dave Williams reports that students showed continued improvement in the latest Georgia Milestones tests that cratered during the pandemic, the state Department of Education (DOE) reported Friday. The 2023-24 results showed scores increased or held steady in 10 of 13 assessments in English/language arts (ELA), science, and social studies.

John Deem reports that federal officials have recommended $2.8 million in funding for a proposed project to restore oyster reefs and salt marshes around the world’s only intact, documented Saltwater Geechee community. Under the plan, the University of Georgia Research Foundation would work with members of Sapelo Island’s historic Hogg Hammock community, originally settled by freed slaves, to “restore essential fish habitat and increase community flood protection” in an area threatened by climate-driven.

Georgians aim to cut construction waste by reusing materials

Emily Jones reports, at the Re:Purpose Savannah warehouse on the coastal city’s east side, staff and volunteers spent a recent morning unloading wooden panels from a pickup truck, reglazing old windows and using a metal detector to find and pull out nails in used wood. “The materials come from the historic buildings that we lovingly deconstruct,” explained Jordan Lynch, the organization’s salvage manager.

First smalltooth sawfish in 16 years seen in St. Marys River

Gordon Jackson reports that an endangered smalltooth sawfish has been confirmed in the St. Marys River for the first time in 16 years. University of North Florida researchers caught, tagged and released the 9.9-foot fish on July 16 while surveying shark populations in Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia.

Georgia election board sets July 30 online meeting after state attorney general flagged last vote

Stanley Dunlap reports that Georgia State Election Board will meet for the first time since several conservative board members advanced election rules at a meeting on July 12 that has come under fire for allegedly violating Georgia’s Open Meetings Act. According to the notice and agenda for the recently scheduled State Election Board’s virtual meeting on July 30, the five-member panel will confirm the business conducted during the meeting on July 9 and move any unfinished business to the Aug. 6 meeting.
