Environmentalists ask state PSC to pause Georgia Power’s plan to use more natural gas

Stanley Dunlap reports that Atlanta resident Jean Millkey told state regulators Wednesday she has come to grips with her belief that Georgia Power is probably not acting in the best interests of its customers who continue to see their electric bills rise. She spoke to the Georgia Public Service Commission on Wednesday as the five-member panel held a certification hearing on Georgia Power’s plan to build three methane gas and oil burning units that company officials contend is urgently needed to meet the state’s rapidly growing industrial development demands.

Brand is the chief executive of MSG Public Affairs, has worked for President Joe Biden and is the chair of the city’s pension board.

Sapelo zoning referendum set as County officially files to stop it

Michael Hall reports that McIntosh County asked a Superior Court Judge on Monday to stop the referendum process that began July 9 when a group of Sapelo Island residents petitioned the Probate Court seeking a vote that could repeal a Hog Hammock zoning ordinance. Probate Court Judge Harold Webster, less than 36 hours after the county filed in Superior Court seeking a writ of prohibition, issued an order setting the countywide referendum for Oct. 1.

Woods defends dropping AP African American studies course

Dave Williams reports that State School Superintendent Richard Woods Wednesday defended his decision not to recommend adding an Advanced Placement African American studies course to the state’s curriculum offerings during the upcoming school year. Woods’ decision, which was announced Tuesday, drew a barrage of criticism from education groups and Democrats, who argued that failing to move forward with an AP course that was piloted in several school districts this year would deny students an inclusive education that tells the full history of America.

Geoff Duncan endorses Kamala Harris and says he is ‘committed to beating Donald Trump’

Caleb Groves reports, in an interview Wednesday on “Politically Georgia,” former Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan said he would vote for Vice President Kamala Harris over former President Donald Trump. In May, Duncan, a lifelong Republican, endorsed President Joe Biden’s reelection bid, and as the president stepped aside to endorse Harris, Duncan continues to back the Democratic Party in hopes of getting the GOP “back on track” away from Trump’s MAGA base.
