Trevor Williams reports that shipping carrier Ocean Network Express has commenced a new route linking Georgia with India’s western coast, enabling tighter connections between the growing port and one of its up-and-coming markets. The ONE Modern called on the Savannah port June 18, bringing its weekly direct India services to four.

Atlanta esports organization strikes deal with internet giant
Savannah Sicurella reports, Atlanta esports and gaming marketing company Cxmmunity Media has partnered with broadband giant Xfinity to further connect students with educational and career opportunities in gaming. The partnership enables Cxmmunity Media, pronounced “Community,” to expand “The Kickback,” its flagship event held in Atlanta that combines educational panels with gaming tournaments and musical performances.

The Albany Convention & Visitors Bureau has issued the 2024 Summer Passport Challenge, with some 250 qualifying destinations, events and shopping opportunities listed on the passport card.

Emily Jones reports, with much fanfare and celebration, Georgia Power just marked a major milestone: two new nuclear reactors near Augusta, Georgia, are now generating enough electricity to power a million homes, without using fossil fuels or emitting planet-warming carbon dioxide. The new Plant Vogtle nuclear reactors are the first built in the US in decades.

Yamacraw residents wait as Savannah housing area continues to deteriorate
Julia Gentin reports, in June 2020, the Housing Authority of Savannah announced its decision to demolish Yamacraw Village, a decrepit public housing development in downtown Savannah’s oldest Black neighborhood. Four years later, Yamacraw, by most estimates, is in more disrepair, less safe and the estimated 130 tenants who remain still are unsure of what their futures hold.

Georgia teacher pay raises among flurry of new state laws taking effect July 1
Stanley Dunlap reports, after the Georgia legislative session ends in the waning days of winter is when bills lawmakers passed become laws but it isn’t until the summer sizzles July 1 when many of those laws take effect. This Monday’s batch of new laws features big changes to cash bail requirements as well as raises for teachers, police officers, other state employees, as well as extended parental leave.

Georgia launches statewide retail, cyber crime unit amid battle with Internet trade group over ways to curb online thefts

New Georgia law that makes swatting calls a felony takes effect
Kate Verity reports that Georgia Senate Bill 421, one of many pieces of legislation going into effect July 1, aims to increase punishment for those behind so-called swatting calls in order to deter future harrowing law enforcement false alarms in Georgia. With new potential to face steeper consequences, Georgia lawmakers intend to counter the increased number of swatting calls seen in recent years.

State removes limits on donations to tax credits helping kids aging out of foster care
Dave Williams reports that limits on donations to a state tax credit that supports foster children aging out of the system were eliminated effective Monday. The General Assembly created the foster-care tax credit last year with a $20 million cap. In its first year, the program raised almost $11.6 million.
