Georgia Recognized for New Business Investment, Job Creation
Staff reports, on Thursday, the Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD) announced Georgia was awarded a Gold Shovel by economic development business publication Area Development for achieving significant success in attracting new business investment and job creation in 2023. “We could not create the thousands of jobs we have all across Georgia without the work of our economic development teams in all four corners of the state,” said Governor Brian P. Kemp.

Extreme heat, scant rain causing headaches for Georgia farmers
Drew Kann reports that Lucy Ray has one word to describe how most fields of corn and hay an hour east of Atlanta in Morgan County look right now: “crispy.” Weeks of above-normal temperatures with little rain has turned lawns brown around metro Atlanta, but the extremely hot, dry conditions are causing more serious problems on some Georgia farms, said Ray, a University of Georgia agriculture and natural resources agent.

HCA Healthcare to invest $650k in Savannah State University social work intern program
Joseph Schwartzburt reports that on Tuesday, June 25, Savannah State University’s (SSU) Interim President Cynthia Robinson Alexander hosted leaders from Memorial Health Savannah and its parent company HCA Healthcare to announce a $650,000 investment in SSU. “We are committed to creating healthier tomorrows for our community. One way we do this is through partnering with organizations like Savannah State,” said Memorial Health Savannah CEO Brad Talbert.

GPA announces CCO, CFO roles
Staff reports that Georgia Ports Authority announces the appointments of Flavio Batista as Chief Commercial Officer and Rob Dooley as Chief Financial Officer, effective July 1, 2024. The appointments reflect a succession plan put in place in 2023 for the June 30, 2024 retirement of Chief Financial Officer Michaela Thompson and for the current Chief Commercial Officer Cliff Pyron to step into a GPA advisor role.

Cobb Approves Moratorium on Massage Parlor Licenses
Jake Busch reports that the Cobb Board of Commissioners has put a half-year pause on issuing licenses to massage parlors, known more formally as health spas. The decision Tuesday evening came as scrutiny on the businesses in Cobb and around metro Atlanta has increased due to allegations of illegal activity, including human trafficking, and code violations at some of the establishments.

A small town in Georgia could be the new home to a plastics plant. Residents are divided
Kala Hunter reports, in April, Brightmark, which has been operating a pyrolysis plant in Ashley, Indiana, for two years, announced its plans to open a second U.S. plant in Upson County, about an hour west of Macon and an hour northeast of Columbus. The process involves taking plastic waste that is then broken down into smaller pieces, heated, and converted into oil. That oil will get bought by a plastics company to create more plastic.

Georgians react to Biden-Trump debate
Ross Williams and Jill Nolin report that Democrats at Georgia Tech’s McCamish Pavilion faced a crowd of dozens of reporters from around the world shouting questions about President Joe Biden’s debate performance and whether he should remain the party’s candidate. Speaking to reporters in the spin room, U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock said former President Donald Trump’s performance was full of lies and demonstrated that he does not care about average Americans.

Sen. Ossoff proposes bill providing $20 million funding for East Point water infrastructure
Amanda Andrews reports, Georgia U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff is proposing legislation that would designate $20 million to make improvements to one metro Atlanta city’s water system. The East Point Water Infrastructure Enhancement act would allow the Army Corps of Engineers to manage improvements in the city near Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

Ossoff, Warnock launch probe of prison deaths
Dave Williams reports, Georgia’s two U.S. senators launched an inquiry Thursday aimed at strengthening tracking and data collection about deaths of inmates in federal, state, and local custody. Sens. Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock, both Democrats, are asking Attorney General Merrick Garland to improve reporting practices under a law that requires the Justice Department to collect data from states and localities about the deaths of inmates in their custody to help identify potential violations of civil or human rights.
