Georgia Ports Authority sees 22 percent container growth

Staff reports that a strengthening retail market combined with business from new customers is driving substantial growth at the Port of Savannah. The Georgia Ports Authority handled 490,330 twenty-foot equivalent container units in May, an increase of 22 percent or nearly 90,000 TEUs over the same month a year ago.

Five more Georgia communities receiving workforce housing grants

Dave Williams reports, five Georgia communities will receive $10.3 million for infrastructure projects to support more than 300 housing units, Gov. Brian Kemp announced Thursday. The state Department of Community Affairs will distribute the funds as the fourth round of grants through Kemp’s Rural Workforce Housing Initiative, which the governor announced last year during his annual State of the State address to the General Assembly.

Georgia growers part of group saying new rules for migrant farm workers go too far

Sofi Gratas reports that a new rule from the U.S. Department of Labor that would allow some migrant farmworkers to self-organize has some Georgia growers accusing the federal agency of overstepping its bounds. The complaint came as a lawsuit filed Monday in Brunswick by a group of Republican-led states that includes Georgia.

UGA to honor former Georgia Chief Justice Robert Benham with Footsteps Award

Wayne Ford reports, the University of Georgia this week announced that retired Georgia Supreme Court Judge Robert Benham will receive the 2024 Footsteps Award during an event Friday in Atlanta. Benham, a native of Cartersville, was the first Black person to serve as a justice on the Supreme Court of Georgia after he was appointed to the court in December 1989.

Gov. Kemp Tours the Korean Demilitarized Zone

Staff reports, on the first day of their economic development mission to the Republic of Korea, Governor Brian P. Kemp was joined by First Lady Marty Kemp in touring the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). Intersecting the 38th parallel north, the DMZ runs across the Korean Peninsula and was established in 1953 under the provisions of the Korean Armistice Agreement.

VP Harris to speak to influential Black group in Atlanta

Greg Bluestein and Mirtha Donastorg report that Vice President Kamala Harris is set to speak to an influential Black organization in Atlanta on Friday, the first of two visits in a week in Georgia that aim to bolster support from one of the party’s most loyal constituencies. She’ll speak to the annual conference of the 100 Black Men of America at the Hyatt Regency.
