Unemployment claims in Georgia declined last week
Staff reports that initial filings for unemployment benefits in Georgia dropped last week compared with the week prior, the U.S. Department of Labor said Thursday. New jobless claims, a proxy for layoffs, fell to 4,052 in the week ending May 25, down from 4,431 the week before, the Labor Department said.

Appeals judges halt Atlanta DEI grant fund for Black female-led businesses
Mirtha Donastorg reports that an Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals panel halted an Atlanta venture capital fund’s small business grant program for Black women Monday, a major victory for conservative efforts to dismantle diversity, equity and inclusion programs in corporate America. In a 2-1 ruling, the judges said the Fearless Fund’s contest likely violates the federal Civil Rights Act of 1866 that prohibits the use of race in making contracts.

Wellstar Kennestone Named Level 1 Trauma Center
Staff reports that Wellstar Kennestone Hospital has received “the gold standard” rating for trauma care centers in the country, Wellstar Health System announced Friday. The system’s flagship facility was named a Level I Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons, a designation it also received from the Georgia Department of Public Health.

Cobia harvest quota in Georgia could decrease under proposed rule
Staff reports, the recreational fishing quota for Atlantic cobia in Georgia could be reduced if a proposed addendum to a fisheries management rule governing Atlantic states becomes reality. The Coastal Resources Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources is urging anglers to voice their opinions on the proposed rule at a meeting this week in McIntosh County, an online meeting later this month and throughout the public comment period ending in early July.

Conservation group seeks to halt Hyundai EV plant near Savannah with permit challenge
John Deem reports that a coastal Georgia conservation group on Monday informed the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that it will take legal action to stop work on Hyundai Motor Company’s soon-to-open electric-vehicle manufacturing facility near Savannah. In a letter of intent filed Monday, the Ogeechee Riverkeeper (ORK) informed USACE that it is challenging the October 2022 approval of a permit that helped clear the way for the $7.6 million project in Bryan County.
