Georgia Ports auto volumes up 44 percent in April
Staff reports, in its busiest month ever for autos and heavy equipment, the Georgia Ports Authority handled a record 80,600 units of Roll-on/Roll-off cargo in April, an increase of more than 44 percent, or 24,760 units, compared to the same month last year, according to a report to the GPA Board.

Ports Authority says it won’t fund $1B-plus Savannah bridge replacement
Adam Van Brimmer reports, a frequently heard comment Monday night during the first public information session regarding a new Savannah River crossing to replace the Talmadge Bridge was “that’s a lot of money.” Hours later, Georgia Ports Authority officials made it clear they don’t intend to be a funding source for either a new, higher bridge, projected to cost $1.17 billion, or a $2 billion beneath-the-river tunnel.

How $10.7 million Springer campaign will improve historic theater and downtown Columbus
Mark Rice reports, the Springer Opera House, the historic State Theatre of Georgia in Columbus, has launched the public phase of a $10.7 million capital campaign to construct an outdoor theater park, boost its education program and preserve and upgrade the 153-year-old building. More than 80% of the “Forever Springer” fundraiser goal has been secured in pledges during the quiet phase, which started a year ago, Springer CEO and executive producer Danielle Varner told the Ledger-Enquirer.

Benjamin Payne reports, Harris Neck, a 2,824-acre peninsula just off Georgia’s Atlantic coast — in rural McIntosh County, about 30 miles south of Savannah —was long home to Gullah Geechee people from West Africa, first as enslaved workers, and later as landowners after their emancipation through the Civil War. During World War II, though, the federal government forced these Black residents off their land via eminent domain to build an auxiliary airbase.

Sam Gringlas reports that the prosecutor and judge overseeing the Georgia criminal case against former President Donald Trump both easily defeated challengers in local elections on Tuesday. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis won the Democratic primary and Judge Scott McAfee won a full term on the bench.

Carter says he’s weighing 2026 run against Ossoff
Craig Nelson reports that Coastal Georgia Congressman Earl “Buddy” Carter told an Atlanta television station on Tuesday that he’s considering a run in 2026 for the U.S. Senate seat held by Democrat Jon Ossoff. Asked by WXIX-TV’s Zach Merchant if he was “contemplating” a run against Ossoff, Carter replied, “I won’t dispute that.”

Incumbents, young newcomers do well in primary election
Tammy Joyner reports that incumbents prevailed across the board in Tuesday’s primary with a few exceptions. Most incumbents who faced challengers were handily winning as of late Tuesday night with the exception of a few races that appear to be headed to the June 18 runoff.

Socialist Stunner: Sanchez Ousts Anulewicz in State House Primary
Jake Busch reports that Gabriel Sanchez, a 26-year-old server endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America, beat incumbent State Rep. Teri Anulewicz, D-Smyrna, in a stunning Democratic primary upset Tuesday. With 100% of precincts reporting, Sanchez won the District 42 primary with 2,249 votes, or 56.8%, against Anulewicz’s 1,711 votes, or 43.2%, according to unofficial results from Cobb Elections.

Jack, Dugan likely headed for runoff in 3rd Congressional District
Dave Williams reports that a former aide in the Trump White House and a former state senator appeared headed toward a runoff Tuesday night to decide the Republican nominee in Georgia’s 3rd Congressional District. Brian Jack, brandishing an endorsement from former President Donald Trump, was leading former state Sen. Mike Dugan 47.5% to 27.7% with 2,151 of 2,715 precincts reporting in the west-central Georgia district shortly after 10 p.m., according to unofficial results.
