Bird flu risk in Georgia remains low. But state agencies have ongoing plans to manage it anyway

Sofi Gratas reports, from one reported transmission to a human and a multi-state outbreak among dairy cows, the agriculture industry is on high alert for possible cases of H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza — aka bird flu. There have been no reported cases of HPAI in Georgia among people or dairy cows since traces of the virus were found in pasteurized milk last month.

Georgia Attorney General sends letter to City of Savannah challenging gun storage ordinance

Drew Favakeh reports that the Georgia Attorney General has sent a letter to the City of Savannah challenging its recently-passed gun ordinance law. The ordinance requires firearms left in motor vehicles be “securely stored” in compartments or in a locked trunk while also requiring lost or stolen firearms be reported to the Savannah Police Department.

District GOP censures state Rep. Carpenter over vote on immigration bill

Charles Oliver reports that the Georgia 14th Congressional District Republican Party at its annual convention in Rome recently censured state Rep. Kasey Carpenter, R-Dalton, for being the sole Republican in the state House of Representatives to vote against the Georgia Criminal Alien Track and Report Act. That bill, which requires local law enforcement agencies to cooperate with federal immigration authorities, passed both the state House and Senate and was recently signed into law by Gov. Brian Kemp.

Georgia among states seeing higher rate of Medicaid child disenrollments, report finds

Jess Mador reports that roughly a year into the Medicaid “unwinding,” Georgia is among a dozen states across the United States terminating a higher proportion of children from the program than adults, according to a report from the nonprofit think tank Urban Institute. The report analyzed monthly U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Medicaid enrollment reports through November 2023.

Bill adds violation to Soil Amendment Act, but will it stop the stench?

Tammy Joyner reports, after years of enduring intrusive, foul-smelling waste spread on untold tracts of rural land, Georgians living near such sites are finally getting some relief. On Monday, Gov. Brian Kemp signed into law a bill that adds a new violation to the state’s 48-year-old Soil Amendment Act. Soil amendment is meant to help farmers create healthier soil.

Kemp to sign budget with raises for 300,000 workers today

James Salzer reports, as the annual Capitol bill-signing season winds down Tuesday, Gov. Brian Kemp is expected to ink a $36.1 billion state spending plan for the coming fiscal year that includes raises for 300,000 educators and state workers, plus more money for law enforcement, education and mental health programs.
