Georgia Ports Authority, Wallenius Wilhelmsen sign terminal agreement in Brunswick
Taylor Cooper reports that a recently penned 20-year agreement between the Georgia Ports Authority and shipping and logistics giant Wallenius Wilhelmsen will give the company space at the Port of Brunswick to customize industrial vehicles and equipment coming into port before delivering them to dealers and customers, among other things.

Warnock: Georgia ports need more resources after Baltimore bridge wreck
Michael E. Kanell reports that U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock on Wednesday asked both Gov. Brian Kemp and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers “to deploy all necessary additional resources” to Georgia’s ports to help them handle the shift of cargo from Baltimore following the bridge disaster that closed that port. In letters to the Corps and the governor, the senator, cited “a long history of bipartisan support for Georgia’s ports.

Georgia county among 18 communities in global heat mapping project as Earth breaks records
Meris Lutz reports that an area of unincorporated Gwinnett County near Norcross is among 18 global communities selected to take part this summer in a program to map areas of extreme heat, the leading cause of weather-related death in the U.S., according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which oversees the program.

Federal Judge Denies Catoosa GOP’s Petition To Remove Four Candidates From Ballot
John Bailey reports that a federal judge declined to grant a petition by the Catoosa County Republican Party to restrict candidates they don’t feel represent the party’s values from the ballot. U.S. District Court Judge William Ray heard the Catoosa County GOP arguments on April 17 and this week entered an order declining to stop the elections process.

‘It is nothing short of insane:’ Bill to criminalize squatting signed by governor
Jill Jordan Sieder reports that on Wednesday, Gov. Brian Kemp signed legislation criminalizing squatting, the illegal practice of entering and residing on someone else’s property without their consent. The Georgia Squatter Reform Act makes squatting a misdemeanor criminal offense, punishable by up to a year in jail, a $1,000 fine, or both.

Supporters of paid family leave for state workers applaud new Georgia law
Stanley Dunlap reports that parents working in state government and public schools will be able to take up to six weeks of paid parental leave under a new Georgia law. Beginning July 1, eligible government employees will have the opportunity to take up to 240 hours of paid parental leave within a year of the birth of their child, or within a year after adoption or taking in a minor through foster care.

Kemp signs bills to combat human trafficking
Dave Williams reports that Gov. Brian Kemp signed three bills Wednesday aimed at human trafficking in Georgia. “We are taking three important steps forward to make sure Georgia is a safe haven for survivors … turning Georgia into a national leader for victims’ rights and putting criminals behind bars,” Kemp said during a bill signing ceremony at the state Capitol.

Anti-camping laws in Georgia tested by U.S. Supreme Court homeless case
Matt Kempner reports that ordinances in a small West Coast city could scramble the lives of homeless people in Georgia and the powers of community officials to control where they sleep. Dozens of local governments here — from Gwinnett County, Roswell and Marietta to the northern and southern ends of Georgia — have laws banning sleeping outdoors that appear similar to those in faraway Grants Pass, Oregon.
