Atlanta Airport Officials Court Airlines in Namibia
Trevor Williams reports that the southern African nation of Namibia may not be on the map for many in Atlanta, but it grabbed the attention last week of top officials at the world’s busiest airport. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport General Manager Balram “B” Bheodari led a delegation to the country to “advance air service development efforts,” the airport told Global Atlanta in a statement.

Georgia Power approved to store toxic coal ash in groundwater near Rome
Drew Kann reports that state regulators have granted Georgia Power final approval to permanently store toxic coal ash in contact with groundwater at a site near Rome, which environmentalists say threatens human health and conflicts with federal rules for such facilities. The Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) issued a final permit on November 14 to Ash Pond 3 at Plant Hammond, a former coal-fired power plant shuttered in 2019.

Augusta transferring $1.75M for zipline project
Miguel Legoas reports that Augusta took another step forward this week in putting a zipline over the Savannah River. The city’s commissioners approved a memorandum of understanding on consent that would move $1.75 million of SPLOST 8 funds earmarked for a new urban zipline adventure center on Freedom Bridge along the Augusta Riverwalk.

Cobb Development Authority OKs $35 Million in Tax-Exempt Bonds for Kennesaw Charter School
Hunter Riggall reports that the Development Authority of Cobb County’s board approved a resolution this week which will enable a Kennesaw charter school to use up to $35 million in tax-exempt bonds to purchase a campus and expand its facilities. The bond resolution for Northwest Classical Academy was approved unanimously, with board members Donna Rowe and Jamala McFadden absent.

USDA financial program offers assistance to minority who faced discrimination, ramping up outreach in southwest Georgia
Lucille Lannagan reports, the first time a black, Valdosta farmer walked into a local USDA Farming Service Agency seeking financial assistance to start up his farm, he said he didn’t feel welcome. After going through the process, he said, he was denied financial assistance.

Naturalization ceremony held in Newnan for 48 new citizens
Staff reports that a naturalization ceremony was held at the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Georgia, on Nov. 17 for 48 of Coweta’s newest citizens. Zachary Howard, assistant U.S. Attorney, U.S. Department of Justice, read each person’s name and the 23 countries of origin, which included Sweden, China, Brazil, Turkey, Peru, Viet Nam and Spain.

Final medical cannabis licenses in Georgia moving forward after two-year court battle
Asia Ashley reports, after a more than two-year legal battle, the final medical marijuana licenses in Georgia are being issued by the Georgia Access to Medical Cannabis Commission (GMCC). Though some lawsuits from unsuccessful applicants are ongoing, GMCC Chair Sid Johnson said a recent Georgia Court of Appeals ruling against some of those applicants has enabled the commission to move forward with issuing provisional Class II medical cannabis licenses.

Resolution seeks to boycott mined materials
Gordon Jackson reports that a resolution has been filed with Chemours and the nation’s largest paint manufacturer, Sherwin-Williams, asking the global chemistry company to never buy mined titanium dioxide. The resolution is in response to a permit request by Alabama-based Twin Pines Minerals to mine on a 740-acre tract near the southern end of the Okefenokee.

Tammy Joyner and Jill Jordan Sieder report that the Georgia General Assembly will meet next week for a special legislative session to create new electoral maps for the state Legislature and U.S. Congress that will be used during the 2024 elections and beyond. The process is called redistricting. Per a federal judge’s order, they have to finish by Dec. 8.

Georgia Supreme Court blocks Republican-backed prosecutors oversight board
Dave Williams reports that the Georgia Supreme Court Wednesday halted attempts to move forward with a new oversight board for local prosecutors the General Assembly’s Republican majorities created this year. In a six-page ruling, the justices declined to review rules and regulations for the Professional Attorneys Qualifications Commission as required by Senate Bill 92, which lawmakers passed along party lines in March and GOP Gov. Brian Kemp signed in May.
