Georgia Power says economic growth reason for updated plan to generate more electricity
Erica Van Buren reports that Georgia Power recently filed an updated Integrated Resource Plan with the Georgia Public Service Commission, citing the need to support recent economic growth. But an environmental group opposed a portion of the proposed update that calls for burning fossil fuels to generate power.

This is sponsored by the School of Public and International Affairs and honors the late Georgia Sen. Johnny Isakson, a UGA alum who also served in the U.S. House.

Georgia scores new legal victory over Alabama in ‘water wars’ challenge
Drew Kann reports, a federal judge handed the state of Georgia and Metro Atlanta another legal victory on Thursday when it ruled against Alabama in one of several long-running disputes over management of the states’ shared water supplies. The decision by a Washington, D.C., district judge in this installment of the so-called “water wars” marks the latest in a string of victories Georgia has notched in recent years.

Warehouse boom threatens coastal Georgia communities, environmental groups say
John Deem reports, fueled by Georgia’s expanding ports, an explosion in large-scale warehouses is putting water quality and communities at risk along the coasts of Georgia and southern South Carolina, a coalition of environmental organizations warned Monday. Roughly 200 million square feet of warehouse space is either operating or under construction in coastal Georgia and just across the Savannah River in Jasper County, according to data compiled by the groups.

Chick-fil-A pledges $500,000 to Atlanta HBCU to help grow diverse leaders
Staff reports that Atlanta-based Chick-fil-A is giving $500,000 to Morris Brown College to help promote a new generation of diverse leaders. In 2021, the fast food chain started a partnership with the Atlanta HBCU with a gift of $500,000 and is now matching that donation.

Korean Auto Supplier Set to Invest $24M in Coweta County, Hiring 100
Trevor Williams reports, a maker of seats, arm rests and head rests for Kia and Hyundai plans to invest $24 million and hire 100 people in Coweta County, Gov. Brian Kemp announced Nov. 1. Hyundai Industrial Co. Ltd. is the latest in parade of suppliers coming to Georgia.

Sanford Bishop appointed to U.S. Military Academy board
Staff reports that U.S. Congressman Sanford D. Bishop Jr., D-Ga., a senior member of the U.S. House Appropriations Committee, was officially appointed to the Board of Visitors for the United States Military Academy at West Point. “It is an honor to be selected to serve on the West Point Board of Visitors,” Bishop said.

Georgia tax break review panel poised for final report

Jan. 6 rioter plots return to Capitol — by launching U.S. House bid
Adam Van Brimmer reports that a South Georgia man who spent time in jail after being found guilty of taking part in the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol has announced a run for Congress. Chuck Hand and his wife, Taylor County Republican Party Chairwoman Mandy Robinson-Hand, were each sentenced to 20 days in jail and six months of probation in January after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge of illegally demonstrating in the U.S. Capitol.
