Gov. Kemp Renews State of Emergency, Extending State Gas Tax Suspension
Staff reports that Gov. Kemp on Wednesday issued an executive order extending the State of Emergency due to ongoing high prices and uncertain economic conditions. This extension continues the suspension of the state’s excise tax on motor and locomotive fuel through Nov. 29.

WeWork’s bankruptcy will affect Atlanta’s shared workplaces

The co-working company, which was once valued at $47 billion, became a household name before sustaining one of the most high-profile corporate collapses in recent memory.

New pilot program aimed at helping prison inmates find jobs following release
Dave Williams reports, the Walking the Last Mile Reentry Program, to be administered by the Georgia Department of Labor in partnership with the state Department of Corrections, will provide inmates transitioning back to society individualized skills assessments, help them develop those skills based on their needs and interests, and assist them with job placement.

ARC unanimously elects Andre Dickens as next board chair
Maria Saporta reports, for the first time in its history, the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) will be chaired by the mayor of Atlanta. At its regular board meeting on Nov. 8, the ARC board voted unanimously (in a voice vote with no nays or abstentions) to elect Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens as its next chair. He will serve for a two-year term beginning on Jan. 1.

Infant mortality sees significant increase in Georgia
Jim Burress reports that the Centers for Disease Control finds Georgia is one of four states that saw a significant increase in infant mortality over the past year. Dr. Helen Williams, a neonatologist at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, said one problem is the lack of access to obstetric care.

Asia Ashley reports, the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning in September awarded Expanding Parents’ Access to Nontraditional Delivery (EXPAND) Grants to seven child care providers and six nonprofit and government organizations to expand services outside of the traditional hours of Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

State Ag Commissioner on raising awareness of plight of farmers
Tammy Joyner reports that farming is so grueling that some farmers have given their life for it. Literally. More than 100 Georgia farmers have died by suicide since 2008. Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tyler Harper, himself a farmer, recently teamed with the heads of the state Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities and the extension program at the University of Georgia to deal with the problem.
