Georgia GOP leaders trumpet another top ranking by national business trade publication

Jill Nolin reports that Georgia has been named the top state for business for the 10th year by Area Development Magazine. The designation is from an executive magazine focused on site selection and relocation that won’t be found on the average living room coffee table.

But according to corporate site selectors, who are both contributors to and audiences of such indices, the most important criterion is a skilled workforce.

Developer with Russian ties plans warehouse complex east of Atlanta

Zachary Hansen reports that a U.S. development firm affiliated with a Russian company is planning a massive distribution center east of Atlanta in one of the state’s fast-growing industrial hubs. A subsidiary of PNK Group has proposed a 2.4 million-square-foot distribution complex along I-20 near Madison, about an hour east of downtown Atlanta, according to a Development of Regional Impact (DRI) filing, part of an infrastructure review required for large projects.

GICCA receives grant to support EV curriculum

Lauren McDonald reports that students at the Golden Isles College and Career Academy will soon have a new way to take advantage of job opportunities in a growing industry. The Georgia Department of Education recently awarded GICCA with a $150,000 grant to support incorporating electric vehicles into the school’s engineering program.

Baldwin receives grant to create teacher pipeline

Matthew Brown reports that the Baldwin County School District recently announced that it has been selected to receive the Cultivating Teachers Grant, a $9,000 award from the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE). The Baldwin County School District’s “Grow Your Own” teacher program is in partnership with post-secondary institutions, including Georgia College & State University, Central Georgia Technical College, Georgia Military College, Fort Valley State, Middle Georgia State University, Georgia State University and Mercer University.

Georgia High School Association allows athletes to make sponsorship deals

Orlando Montoya reports that the Georgia High School Association is allowing high school athletes to make deals to profit from their name, image and likeness (NIL) — two years after Georgia college athletes got the same allowance. The group’s executive director, Robin Hines, said the vote by the association’s board Monday was inevitable after 31 other states had already allowed such agreements.

Plans for Georgia’s opioid settlement dollars still in limbo, study shows need for behavioral facilities

State Election Board defeats bid to offer voting with hand-marked paper ballots

Dave Williams reports that the State Election Board late Tuesday unanimously rejected a proposal to let Georgians vote with hand-marked paper ballots in instances where using touch-screen voting machines cannot guarantee privacy. Both state law and the Georgia Constitution require that voters be allowed to cast their ballots in secrecy.
