Georgia coal ash pond neighbors channel frustrations through proposed EPA crackdown in Alabama

Stanley Dunlap reports that Juliette resident Gloria Hammond has watched as families moved away from their homes located next to what was once the largest coal-fired power plant in the country. On Wednesday, Hammond urged the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to follow through with its rejection of Alabama’s proposed coal ash disposal rules.

SK Battery ushered EV sector into Georgia. Now it is cutting some jobs

Kanell reports that SK Battery America in Jackson County, among the foundational manufacturers in Georgia’s electric vehicle ecosystem, is laying off workers after years of rapid expansion. SK Battery declined to say Tuesday evening how many positions are involved, but the company has confirmed that a group of workers have been laid off in Commerce, about 70 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta, where the subsidiary of South Korea-based SK Innovation has two lithium-ion battery manufacturing facilities.

Biotech firm scales back design for Marietta headquarters

Hunter Riggall reports that a Marietta-based biotechnology firm has informed the city that it plans to reduce the size of the headquarters it wants to build on Franklin Gateway. The company, MiRus, plans to build its new headquarters on a 6.7-acre site at the corner of Franklin Gateway and South Marietta Parkway, formerly home to a flea market.

Low-cost solar program Georgia BRIGHT applications open for Savannah residents

Evan Lasseter reports, as Savannah chases its goal for using 100% renewable energy citywide by 2035, it is kicking off a new solar program geared toward the city’s low- and middle-income households. Applications opened Tuesday to participate in Georgia BRIGHT, a statewide program which allows for affordable leasing of solar for Savannahians with gross annual household incomes of $100,000 or less per year.
