What a federal government shutdown could mean for air travel

Kelly Yamanouchi reports, during the last federal shutdown that started in late December 2018 and continued into January 2019, many travelers ended up waiting in security lines as long as an hour and a half at Hartsfield-Jackson, causing some to miss their flights. Air traffic controllers and Transportation Security Administration officers would be deemed essential and would have to work without pay if lawmakers can’t work out a deal to keep government funded.

Porsche Names New CEO After Gruner Departs to Rivian

Trevor Williams reports that Porsche’s North American headquarters in Atlanta has hired a new CEO months after the its former leader departed to join electric-vehicle startup Rivian. The German sports car maker named 48-year-old Timo Resch to the role, bringing him back to where he started his career after stints with other major German auto makers.

3M states it will not seek to block release of Rome water pollution settlement details

John Bailey reports that the 3M Company on Tuesday stated that it will not seek to block the City of Rome from releasing settlement information stemming from a water pollution lawsuit. “3M does not plan to object to the settlement’s disclosure, nor to join DuPont’s legal proceedings seeking to prevent disclosure,” Sean Lynch, communications manager for 3M stated in an email to the Rome News-Tribune.

Nonagenarian farmer says going organic 40 years ago ‘produced miraculous results’

Martha Giddens Nesbit reports, at 92, Shirley Daughtry can’t wait to hop out of bed each morning, put on her jeans and wide-brimmed hat, and head to the Heritage Organic Farm fields right outside her back door to dig in the dirt. Daughtry has been farming organically since the mid-1980s and hers was the first farm certified by the Georgia Organic Growers in 1993, as soon as certification became available in the state.

Construction projects slow business at Port of Savannah

Harris visits Morehouse as part of national HBCU swing to rally young voters 

Ross Williams reports that Vice President Kamala Harris received a friendly welcome Tuesday afternoon when she stopped by Morehouse College in Atlanta as part of a national college tour. The crowd, which consisted of students from Atlanta’s historically Black colleges and universities, roared with applause as the VP took the stage for a moderated conversation which lasted about 45 minutes.

The Jolt: Supreme Court decision signals Georgia redistricting map makeover

Adam Van Brimmer, Patricia Murphy, Tia Mitchell and Greg Bluestein report that the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected Alabama’s attempt to restore a Republican-backed political map that safeguarded only one majority-Black district, buoying the legal hopes of Georgia Democrats challenging the state’s 2021 redistricting on similar grounds. Plaintiffs contesting Georgia’s maps recently wrapped up a two-week federal trial, arguing lawmakers’ redrawing of U.S. House district lines in northern metro Atlanta had a similar effect.
