Georgia’s pecan industry at crossroads

Clint Thompson reports that the pecan industry in the Southeast U.S. is at a crossroads, and the 2019 season could go a long way toward determining the financial future for many Georgia farmers, according to Lenny Wells, University of Georgia Cooperative Extension pecan specialist. The cost to produce pecans continues to increase every year. With new tariffs imposed on goods exported from the U.S. to China, prices producers received dropped significantly last year.

Fleetcor Technologies to relocate to Buckhead from Gwinnett

Scott Trubey reports that a financial technology company in Gwinnett County is moving its headquarters to Buckhead. Fleetcor Technologies, which manages companies’ payments for fuel, tolls, lodging and other expenses, has signed a lease for 46,000 square feet of office space at Terminus 100, according to a Tuesday news release from the building’s owner, Cousins Properties.

Ga. House yanks Gwinnett MARTA vote delay from Senate Bill 200

Curt Yeomans reports that a proposal that would have blocked Gwinnett County from holding another MARTA vote for seven years was yanked by the Georgia House of Representatives from legislation dealing with Georgia Department of Transportation contracts Tuesday. The proposal from the six Republicans in Gwinnett’s majority-Democrat House Delegation would have barred county leaders from calling for another vote on MARTA until after Jan. 1, 2026.

David Pendered reports that President Obama’s administration blocked President Trump from expanding the area open to offshore oil drilling, including off Georgia’s coast, a federal judge has ruled. On a related front, the Georgia House approved Tuesday a resolution opposing the exploration and drilling for oil off Georgia’s coast.

Coastal delegation pens offshore plea to governor

Mary Landers reports, in In a letter dated March 20, the bipartisan coastal delegation to the General Assembly asked Gov. Brian Kemp to join them in expressing their opposition to seismic testing and offshore drilling to the federal Bureau of Ocean Energy Management. The lawmakers, led by Sen. William Ligon, R-Brunswick, first noted Kemp’s public opposition to offshore drilling for Georgia, then made their request.

Georgia Bill To Raise Minimum Age for Marriage Heads To Governor’s Desk

Ross Terrell reports that Georgia lawmakers have agreed to raise the minimum age for marriage from 16 to 17 years old. The bill also requires 17-year-olds who want to get married provide proof they’ve been emancipated from their parents.

John Popham reports that Tuesday was the final day of the Georgia General Assembly and also served as the deadline for several education bills with some passing both chambers and some having to wait until next year to be revisited. House Bill 602, the Rome Building Authority, and 603, which provided a pay increase for Floyd County Schools Board of Education members, both passed the House and Senate.

House Bill 445 — a Shore Protection Act revision years in the making — barely cleared its last hurdle Tuesday in the state House of Representatives, with a 93-75 vote.

Lawmakers give Cobb County a two-year extension on MARTA vote

David Wickert reports that Cobb County will have two more years to decide whether it wants to create a special transit district where votes could join MARTA. Just before midnight Tuesday, the House of Representatives passed a bill that gives Cobb County until 2021 to devise the boundaries of a special transit district where voters could decide to join MARTA.
