Meta settlement would require new teen safeguards and could deliver up to $135 million to Georgia
Ty Tagami reports that an agreement to resolve a federal lawsuit brought by Georgia and other states and U.S. jurisdictions would require Meta to impose new limits on teen accounts on its social media platforms while also giving parents the option for more control. The operator of Facebook and Instagram also agreed to pay up to $17.1 billion to the plaintiffs as part of the settlement proposal filed Wednesday in federal district court in California.

Federal appeals court voids ruling that Georgia’s political maps violated Voting Rights Act
Maya Homan reports that the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is sending a lawsuit over Georgia’s 2021 political maps back to a lower court, ordering it to reexamine an earlier ruling that concluded the state’s maps were racially discriminatory. The decision comes a few months after a U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Louisiana v. Callais that diluted a key provision of the 1965 Voting Rights Act by ruling that plaintiffs must prove there was “intentional racial discrimination” in order for gerrymandered districts to be overturned.

Judges order review of Georgia’s district maps under new voting rights rules
Tamar Hallerman reports, a panel of federal appellate judges on Tuesday directed a lower court to reconsider a decision that determined Georgia’s previous political maps had illegally weakened Black voting power. Three jurists on the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals nullified a trial judge’s ruling on Georgia’s 2021 maps, saying it needed to be reexamined in light of a major U.S. Supreme Court decision this spring that significantly changed the legal standard for court challenges under the 1965 Voting Rights Act.
