Rain puts a dent in Middle Georgia’s drought, ‘but we need more’

Margaret Walker reports, after weeks of punishing drought conditions, recent rainfall has begun easing one of the worst dry spells central Georgia has seen in more than a decade. But for the rivers, farmers and residents of Middle Georgia, the relief may be more fragile than it appears.

Coca-Cola is exploring IPO for largest Indian bottler

Amy Wenk reports that Coca-Cola said Monday it is exploring an initial public offering for Hindustan Coca-Cola Holdings, the parent company of the Indian bottler. If Coke moves forward with the plan, it would become the latest in a string of moves in recent years to reduce the company’s involvement in direct bottling.

Despite recent rain, drought persists in Augusta and much of Georgia

Erica Van Buren reports that Georgia remains in an extended period of drought — a major consequence of climate change, experts say — driven by rising temperatures and increased evaporation that dries out soil and vegetation. Historically, this is the sixth-driest year to date over the past 132 years (January-April 2026), with precipitation 6.85 inches below normal.

Development Authority OKs tax breaks for Arthur Blank’s women’s soccer HQ

Hunter Riggall reports that the city’s Development Authority voted unanimously Wednesday to approve a transaction that will provide tax breaks to Arthur Blank’s professional women’s soccer club. Blank, the billionaire cofounder of The Home Depot who owns the MLS’ Atlanta United and the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons, is building the facility on a 33-acre vacant site off Franklin Gateway in Marietta, less than a mile south of United’s headquarters.

Richmond Hill rejects nickel refining in zoning appeal

Mary Landers reports that Richmond Hill officials made it clear at a packed meeting on Tuesday that a proposed nickel refinery doesn’t have a clear path to operate at the site it’s been eyeing. By a unanimous vote the council affirmed that “the refining of nickel, cobalt, or other heavy metals through carbonyl or other processes are not permitted within the level two PUD (planned unit development).”

Columbus Council to vote on version of data center rules created by ‘unofficial’ board

Brittany McGee reports, during its meeting Tuesday night, the Columbus Council substituted the proposed technology overlay district ordinance for one created by an “unofficial” data center committee, meaning the new version of the ordinance would be what is used when it comes to a vote The council also voted to delay the first reading of the ordinance for one week, so it will be on the June 9 meeting’s agenda.

Tybee Island completes major water and sewer upgrade

Destini Ambus reports, when it comes to infrastructure improvements, Tybee Island’s sewer project on Pulaski Street was the number one solution to a number two problem, said Mayor Brian West Wednesday morning. The City of Tybee Island has had a history of avoiding consistent investments in infrastructure improvements said City Manager Bret Bell, but a big step was recently completed in improving the aging water and sewer systems on the island.

Georgia races to resolve ballot system uncertainty

Jack Rutherford reports, as the General Assembly prepares to head back to the Gold Dome for its June 17 special session, issues with balloting will be top of mind as lawmakers work to find a solution before a July 1 deadline for replacing how Georgians cast votes. The regular session ended as the Legislature took no action to find a replacement for the current system of ballots that record votes in QR codes.

Alander Rocha reports that the June special session aimed at redrawing the state’s political map and addressing election ballot QR codes just got busier. Gov. Brian Kemp issued an amended proclamation Wednesday adding three new tasks for the Legislature to consider when they gavel in for a special legislative session on June 17.

Ty Tagami reports that the Georgia Supreme Court has removed a pandemic-era barrier to executions, checking off a legal condition that must be met before ending the lives of certain inmates sentenced to death. The decision overturned a lower court ruling that had put executions on hold over access to COVID-19 vaccines.

Georgia voting overhaul could bring big payday to companies

Caleb Groves and Tamar Hallerman report, a vendor set up outside the state Capitol during the General Assembly’s legislative session in March to tout his voting touchscreens and ballot tabulators. Nebraska-based Election Systems & Software was angling for a lucrative statewide contract it expected to go out for bid in early 2027, one that would determine how millions of Georgians cast ballots.
