Women Leaders in Athens
March is all about celebrating the women who are making an impact—from trailblazing entrepreneurs and industry leaders to creatives and community advocates. Athens, Georgia is home to many inspiring women whose stories deserve recognition during Women’s History Month.
- Serra Jaggar, founder of Indie South, has grown Athens’ largest makers market from a small pop-up in 2006 into a thriving hub for local artists. Beyond the market’s expansion, she has also established a successful brick-and-mortar store, further strengthening the region’s artisan economy and creative community.
- Janet Geddis, owner of Avid Bookshop, isn’t just a bookseller—she’s a community builder. Her independent bookstore has become a hub for literary events, activism and the “buy local” mantra, proving that small businesses can have a big cultural impact. Janet Geddis was a 2018 Georgia Trend 40 Under 40.
- Katie Williams, VP of Sales, Marketing and Tourism for The Classic Center and Executive Director of Visit Athens, is redefining Athens’ place on the map. With the opening of Akins Ford Arena last December, she’s positioning the city as a premier destination for major events, meetings and tourism.
- Ally Smith, co-owner of Puma Yu’s, is the creative force behind one of Athens’ most acclaimed restaurants. Her expertise in craft cocktails and dedication to natural wines—especially those from women and underrepresented producers—has helped shape the city’s dining scene in bold, unexpected ways.
- Jennifer Dollander, owner and founder of Alumni Cookie Dough, turned a love for sweets into a rapidly growing business. Athens’ first cookie dough café quickly expanded to multiple locations and even launched a franchise, proving that a great idea (and great cookie dough) can go a long way.
- Laura Hope Whitaker, CEO of esp Inc., is a powerhouse advocate for individuals with disabilities and their families. Under her leadership, the nonprofit has expanded its programming, fundraising efforts and community outreach, making inclusion more than just a mission—it’s a movement. Laura Hope was a 2018 Georgia Trend 40 Under 40.
