Solar panel manufacturer announces new plant in Cartersville, plans to employ 4,000 Georgians
Staff reports that a South Korean company has started production of solar panels at its newest Georgia plant. The company, Qcells, announced its Cartersville plant is up and running. Their other plant in North Georgia is located in Dalton.

Lautaro Grinspan reports, Atlanta-area nonprofits that serve Hispanic and refugee residents received multimillion dollar donations from billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott. Last year, Ser Familia and Ethne Health were among more than 6,000 organizations that responded to an open call for funding from Scott’s own nonprofit, Yield Giving.

Plant Vogtle Unit 4 nuclear reactor reaches 100% power, says Georgia Power
Erica Van Buren reports that Georgia Power this week announced that Unit 4 at Plant Vogtle has reached another milestone as the nuclear expansion project nears completion. “Achieving 100% power is the latest milestone as we work to complete Unit 4 as a reliable, emission-free new energy source for Georgia,” said John Kraft, a spokesperson for Georgia Power.

Duluth-based company’s compostable oil absorbent products are hitting Home Depot shelves
Curt Yeomans reports that a Duluth-based company that produces the world’s first compostable oil absorbent has been serving companies for six years but its now expanding into the home improvement market for people who prefer to clean up any oil that spills at their homes themselves. The company, Green Boom, announced its products will now be sold in Home Depot stores to cater to the “Do It Yourself,” or DIY, market.

Cuthbert hospital officials get hope in fight to re-open facility that closed in 2020
Alan Mauldin reports that while bipartisanship often seems as elusive nowadays as a polka-dotted unicorn, the distress of a small southwest Georgia town whose hospital closed nearly four years ago has rallied help from elected officials from Cuthbert to Washington, D.C. When the Randolph County Hospital closed in October 2020, it was a huge blow for the community as well as part of a trend that saw nearly 20 rural hospitals close nationwide during the same year.

GCIV Welcomes Visitors from 97 Countries to Georgia
Trevor Williams reports that the Georgia Council of International Visitors welcomed 311 inbound guests from 97 countries to the state in 2023, according to the nonprofit’s annual report. GCIV, a member of the Global Ties U.S. network of state-affiliated organizations fostering citizen diplomacy, helps coordinate programs under the auspices the U.S. State Department’s International Visitor Leadership Program.

Gordon Jackson reports that the president of Toledo Manufacturing, a timber company based in Charlton County, questions why his company has been criticized for campaign donations to Gov. Brian Kemp and other state lawmakers. GCSU’s midwifery program, the first in Georgia, is now fully accredited
Staff reports that the nurse midwifery concentration in Georgia College & State University’s Master of Science in Nursing is now fully accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education. Pre-accredited since May 2020, the program has graduated two cohorts of nurse-midwives and is the first public program of its kind to be accredited in Georgia.

Georgia lawmakers work to tackle growing energy concerns
Emily Jones reports that the Georgia General Assembly wants to suspend tax breaks for high-tech data centers and won’t extend extra benefits to cryptocurrency mining operations. These operations rely on large banks of computer servers that use huge amounts of energy – a concern that was on lawmakers’ minds as they passed the data center bill and failed to advance the crypto measure.

News ads in Georgia, eight other states oppose crackdown on auto emissions
Dave Williams reports that a lobbying group representing the oil and gas industry launched a seven-figure ad campaign in Georgia and eight other states Wednesday targeting a proposal to tighten regulations on fossil-fuel emissions from passenger vehicles. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced new rules on auto emissions last month in a bid to steer the auto industry and its customers toward buying more electric vehicles.

Georgia Republicans piece together support for families after 2019 abortion law
Maya T. Prabhu and Michelle Baruchman report, Georgia lawmakers this year voted to double the amount of paid parental leave available for state workers, expanding to six weeks the amount of time new parents can take off after adopting or giving birth to a child. During debate on the GOP-led legislation, state Sen. John Albers, a Republican from Roswell, made clear his reasons for supporting it: “This bill is a pro-family and pro-life bill.”
