Amazon’s Future Engineer Scholarships expand tech career opportunities

Amazon is committed to growing the tech talent and diversity in Georgia.

The Amazon Future Engineer program offers a $40,000 scholarship for students pursuing a computer science-related or STEM major. Winners of the scholarship also then receive a 12-week internship at Amazon during the summer following their freshman year of college.

21 students from all across Georgia received the AFE scholarship for 2023.

Criteria for the scholarship require that the student pursue a degree in a computer science-related field of study, including a variety of engineering fields, robotics, aeronautics, and information systems. The student must also demonstrate financial need. The AFE program offers underserved students upgraded career opportunities based on their academic achievements.

Eight students from Atlanta Public Schools, Clayton and DeKalb county received their awarded AFE scholarship during a tech panel in April.

These eight students represent who Amazon aims to support with their investments in the education system. The AFE program awards $10 million in scholarships annually for 250 students.

As a large tech company, Amazon wants to expand the accessibility of high-paying jobs and help young people thrive in their communities.

Georgia is currently home to 13 Amazon fulfillment centers, and a software development center run by an Amazon subsidiary called A2Z Development in downtown Atlanta.

The AFE interns become immersed in a software or hardware engineering team. Students work alongside mentors and fellow interns on projects with real impact on Amazon’s customers.

While gaining hands-on experience, the internship also provides mentorship from industry professionals and relationship-building amongst the intern cohorts. The pool of interns grows each year, so expanding the network of awardees is yet another advantage of the program.
