Celebrate National Preservation Month in Georgia

May is National Preservation Month and the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation is hosting events that coincide with local activities sponsored by community organizations, historical societies, Main Street programs and other preservation nonprofits.

The celebrations began last week with the Georgia Trust’s sold-out virtual workshop on preserving the state’s historic African American resources. Next up, on May 18, the organization will host a virtual Neel Reid Lecture about stereotomy, the centuries-old art of advanced drawing and construction methods. In addition, a virtual tour of the 1924 Randolph-Lucas-Jones House in Atlanta will be featured this month.

Since its founding in 1973, the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation has worked to assist in community revitalization by finding buyers for endangered properties it has acquired. The Trust also raises awareness of other endangered historic resources and honors preservation projects and individuals with its annual Preservation Awards. Offering educational programs for adults and children, providing technical assistance to property owners and historic communities and advocating for funding, tax incentives and preservation-friendly laws are among its other activities.
