Unofficial Guide Issue 10.06: Eat, Visit, Do, and Shop
This edition of our Unofficial Guide has made me really hungry. Between fair food and southern cooking, my taste buds are begging for a road trip. Hopefully you’ll find something in this list you’ve not experienced before, and can put it on your list of future outings. Enjoy!
Eat: Yoder’s Deitsch Haus in Montezuma. This Amish restaurant in the middle of rural Macon County serves up the very best of southern cooking, prepared by members of the Amish community that has been a huge part of this area for years. The buffet-style presentation, along with a beautiful bakery, allows you to see exactly what you’re getting – and you’ll be getting a LOT, I promise! You’ll leave with a full belly and a full heart.
Visit: The Georgia National Fair in Perry. Whether you’re wanting a full midway experience, just a day of eating fair food, time to browse exhibits, a night for seeing a concert, or simply a way to people watch, the Georgia National Fair is the one for you. You can grab a corn dog, lemonade, and turkey leg, watch a baby calf be born, and then stroll through the Georgia Grown building… all before hitting the Himalaya and Scrambler on the midway! It’s on from October 8-18 off I-75 in Perry.
Do: Hit the Macon Beer Fest. We highlighted it in this month’s magazine, so read more about its origins and then head to Macon for that free prostate screening. Reward yourself with a beer!
Shop: Downtown Greensboro, GA is the cutest downtown area. Whether you’re visiting Lake Oconee or just want to pop down for a Saturday, there are shops for everyone, as well as dining options.
