Unofficial Guide Issue 08.11: Eat, Visit, Do, and Shop
The Dog Days of Summer are in full force. It’s hot. It’s humid. It’s summer in Georgia. Even though the children may have gone back to school, we’re all still traveling around soaking up the last drops of summer before fall ramps up and sports take up all of our weekends and free time! And we have suggestions for you.
Eat: Steffens in Kingsland. I’ve only been once, but the biscuits and gravy lives rent-free in my brain. Fresh meat, local shrimp, the sweetest tea, and retro decor makes this a must-stop on your way throught the most southeast corner of the state. Warning: you will be so full, you’ll want a nap. So plan accordingly.
Visit: Black Rock Mountain State Park in the northeast corner of the state, is the highest state park and the temperatures will be a bit more tolerable on these hot and humid days. With cabins, tent sites, RV sites, and walk-in campgrounds (among other types), there is someplace to stay for people with any comfort preference. The park also has a beautiful lake, picnicing areas, a playground, and boating/fishing activities.
Do: In our August issue, Jerry Grillo highlighted six different cities that have “third places” that are creating community and fun. These gathering spaces satisfy “our natural inclination to put aside our cares for a while and enjoy life in a social setting.” Look around your own town and maybe you’ll find there is a third place just waiting for you to visit.
Shop: The Beehive Atlanta is a big favorite for finding just the right little treat for someone (or yourself) while shopping small, local, handmade, and affordable. They’re freshly moved in to a new space in the Glenwood Park area of East Atlanta. With over 20 makers and brands, you’re sure to find something unique .
