Unofficial Guide Issue 07.28: Eat, Visit, Do, and Shop
This edition of our Unofficial Guide takes you to some fun (and different) places. As the schools all get back in session, maybe you’re making some last minute summer memories. With old-timey and quirky places on the list, you’ll probably find some Instagram-worthy moments to capture!
Eat: The Jerks of Cartersville is THE place to get a real soda fountain experience. Here you’ll find a lot of fun and, of their own admission, a little weird. Scouring the menu is an event of itself. My order is a good old-fashioned Banana Split. But if I had to choose a float, it would definitely be The Fizzician. What are you ordering?
Visit: Pasaquan in Buena Vista. “The Mock-Precolumbian Psychedelic Wonderland, Pasaquan is a 7-acre visionary art environment, deep in the Pines of Marion County, GA. It was constructed by the late artist Eddie Owens Martin who went by the name St. EOM.” (from the Pasaquan website) Columbus State University has stewardship of the property and it’s open to the public Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 10am to 5pm.
Do: Take a class at Spruill Center for the Arts in Dunwoody. The center has classes for youth and adults, offered during the week and weekends, day and night. You can choose from their extensive catalog of classes, ranging from ceramics to fiber arts, acrylics to watercolors, woodworking to blacksmithing, and so much more.
Shop: Since we’re already at Spruill, stop in their shop for handmade goods from local artisans. They’re open Tuesday – Saturday from 10am to 6pm and Sunday from noon to 4pm. And you can mark your calendar for their Holiday Art Fair.
