A brief break in Georgia’s drought grants a window for peanut farmers to push into the field
Grant Blankenship reports, the rain ending April was just enough to ease the severe drought gripping the state and allow planting for one of Georgia’s premier crops: peanuts. Fourth-generation peanut farmer Kenny Ray Davis Jr., of Ben Hill County, said Georgia peanut farmers like to plant around the middle of April.

Columbus-based startup launches product to create ‘a healthier world’
Jordyn Paul-Slater reports that VentorLux LLC founder Nathan Carr has spent years refining what he calls a practical way to clean the air in high-traffic buildings like hospitals, military barracks and detention centers, where respiratory illness can spread quickly. The company’s flagship device, the Soulis X1, is part of the Soulis product line and uses UVC light produced by LEDs inside an enclosed unit to treat circulating air, an approach Carr said can reduce the number of airborne microorganisms in a room.

$4.7 million anonymous gift will support housing initiatives
Staff reports that, local housing initiatives are sitting on firmer foundations this week thanks to a $4.7 million anonymous gift given recently to the Communities of Coastal Georgia Foundation. A private donor who has chosen to remain anonymous donated the money to support housing and community initiatives, the foundation said.

Fulton County fights Department of Justice push for 2020 election worker information
Maya Homan reports, Fulton County officials are trying to stop the U.S. Department of Justice from gaining access to the private information of nearly 3,000 Georgians who served as election workers and volunteers during the 2020 presidential election.The Justice Department is demanding Fulton County Board of Registration and Elections to turn over the names, positions, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses of all county election workers and volunteer poll workers who assisted with the 2020 general election.

In ‘monumental step,’ Kemp signs education package led by new literacy law
Ty Tagami reports that a bipartisan education initiative that seeks to boost reading skills among young public school students in Georgia will go into effect this year after Gov. Brian Kemp signed it into law Tuesday, along with a package of other education bills. The Georgia Early Literacy Act of 2026 is a sweeping overhaul of prior legislation that targeted literacy and dyslexia.
