‘Catastrophic failure’ of gangway led to 7 deaths on Sapelo

Mary Landers and Robin Kemp report, a “catastrophic” structural failure caused the collapse of an 80-foot gangway at the Sapelo Island ferry dock that sent dozens of people tumbling into swirling tidal waters, leaving seven dead and three in critical condition, a state official said Sunday.

Chick-fil-A to expand to Singapore

Kanell reports, Chick-fil-A has announced the start of what it says will be a $75 million expansion in Singapore, part of an ambitious plan the College Park-based chain has to spread its signature offerings through Asia. The 57-year-old company, the third-largest, quick-service chain in the United States, has a 10-year blueprint that will start with the opening of its first restaurant in Singapore in late 2025, Chick-fil-A officials said this week.

Wildlife Service proposes Okefenokee expansion

Known as the Sweet Auburn Curb Market among locals, the market was established as a brick-and-mortar in 1924.

Newton County Sheriff’s Office to receive $150,000 grant for FY24 Kevin and Avonte Program

Staff reports that the U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) awarded $150,000 in grant funding to the Newton County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) for the FY24 Kevin and Avonte Program: Reducing Injury and Death of Missing Individuals with Dementia and Developmental Disabilities. The Newton County Sheriff’s Office is one of 15 agencies that received the grant for federal fiscal year 2024.

Controversial rock quarry in Jackson County faces opposition ahead of planning meeting

Wayne Ford reports that a massive rock quarry and asphalt plant is proposed for a nearly 1,000-acre tract of land in southern Jackson County that has raised numerous concerns from various groups including the city of Athens and the Oconee Rivers Greenway Commission. The quarry is proposed by Vulcan Materials, a corporation based in Birmingham, Alabama, with quarries and construction materials sites operating in 23 states across the country.

Industrial Park Lands Chinese, Japanese Subsidiaries in Flowery Branch 

Trevor Williams reports that global real estate developer Hines, based in Texas, has landed international clients for two of three buildings in its new Hall County logistics park. ETI Lighting, a subsidiary of NVC International, a Hong Kong-listed company that operates six manufacturing sites in China, purchased the 111,000-square foot Building C in Thurmon Tanner Logistics, an industrial park in Flowery Branch, Hines said in a news release.
