Federal government approves half billion dollars in Hurricane Helene aid for Georgia
Ty Tagami report that farmers and other agricultural producers in Georgia will get federal financial aid to help with recovery from Hurricane Helene, the massive storm that wiped out crops and timberland more than a year ago. Georgia and U.S. agriculture officials announced Tuesday that the state will receive $531,236,000 from the U.S. government for a Hurricane Helene Block Grant Program.

Port of Savannah container volumes up 9 percent in August
Staff reports that the Port of Savannah handled 534,037 twenty-foot equivalent container units (TEUs) in August, an increase of 44,000 TEUs, or 9 percent year-over-year, representing the third highest month in GPA history. Container volumes were 1,010,725 TEUs fiscal year-to-date through August, 3.2% higher than last year.

State developing new historic preservation plan
Staff reports, in its role as Georgia’s State Historic Preservation Office, the Historic Preservation Division of the Department of Community Affairs (DCA) is developing a new Statewide Historic Preservation Plan to guide and support efforts to preserve Georgia’s historic places. The National Park Service requires each State Historic Preservation Office to develop and implement a comprehensive Statewide Historic Preservation Plan.

Pathway to Prosperity: Two new homes built in pilot program seen as pathway to home ownership
Wayne Ford reports that the East Athens Development Corp. this week held an open house for two recently completed new homes that could one day provide families renting the houses with a “pathway to home ownership.” The event attracted numerous people who were also involved in or supported the pilot program “Pathway to Prosperity” that debuted on Fairview Street, in a neighborhood off Peter Street.

Staff reports that Exchange Bank recently announced a $25,000 contribution to the Milledgeville Police Department to help equip and train the officers who work daily to keep our community safe. Ga. Supreme Court upholds citizens’ right to vote to repeal Sapelo zoning
Mary Landers reports, in a unanimous decision issued Tuesday, the Georgia Supreme Court upheld the right of McIntosh County residents to vote directly to repeal a controversial zoning decision that would allow larger houses in a traditional Gullah-Geechee enclave on Sapelo Island. The zoning ordinance that county commissioners approved in September 2023 would allow the construction of houses of up to 3,000 square feet in the modest, 434-acre Hogg Hummock neighborhood.

Georgia voters have until Oct. 6 to register to vote for this year’s PSC, municipal elections
Maya Homan reports that Georgia voters have less than one week left to change or update their voter registration ahead of this fall’s statewide and municipal elections. Peach State residents can register to vote ahead of the Oct. 6 registration deadline by going online to the secretary of state’s website or by mailing a voter registration application to the secretary of state’s office.

Participation in Medicaid child dental care continues to decline in Georgia, audit finds
Alander Rocha reports that a state agency responsible for administering Medicaid in Georgia has failed to adopt or follow through on most of the recommendations made in an earlier audit that were meant to help more children, including those with disabilities, obtain dental care, according to a recent report. Despite a 2021 state audit that highlighted falling dental care utilization among a group of Georgia children enrolled in Medicaid, a recent follow-up review found that the situation has worsened.

Greg Dolezal, R-Cumming, a conservative from the northern Atlanta suburbs, joins a cast of fellow conservative senators, all from outside the biggest metro area — plus an Atlanta Senate Democrat and a GOP state representative from Buford.
