US Postal Service to issue Forever stamp commemorating former President Jimmy Carter

Kendall Murray reports that U.S. Postal Service will issue a commemorative Forever stamp for former U.S. President and Georgia native Jimmy Carter, who passed away last year at the age of 100. Representatives of the postal service, as well as members of the National Park Service and the Friends of Jimmy Carter organization, unveiled the designs Saturday at the Jimmy Carter National Historical Park in Plains.

Fulton proposes $1.1 billion plan to add mental health facility, renovate jail

Bob Pepalis reports that the Fulton County Commission will consider a $1.1 billion plan to build a special-purpose mental and medical health facility and to make repairs to the Fulton County Jail to meet the requirements of a consent decree with the U.S. Department of Justice. Commission Chairman Robb Pitts held a briefing on Monday to outline the plan developed by consultants and county staff that would use revenue from tax allocation districts for funding.

Advocates say $20 million fine a first step toward enforcement of Georgia mental health parity law

Maya Homan reports that mental health advocates gathered at the state Capitol in Atlanta to urge Georgia Insurance Commissioner John King to step up enforcement of the state’s mental health parity laws just a few days after King’s office announced it would fine health insurance companies $20 million for failing to comply. The fines, announced Friday, mark the first major instance of the state enforcing a 2022 law aimed at ensuring that insurers cover mental health care alongside its coverage for physical health.

Georgia lawmakers study addiction, suggest regulating treatment centers

Ty Tagami reports that centers that offer services to people experiencing addiction could face more regulation in Georgia, as lawmakers investigate how they operate and whether they are effective enough. “There are rehab centers all over the state of Georgia that are not meeting the standard that we feel should be there,” state Sen. Randy Robertson, R-Cataula, chairman of the Senate Study Committee on Recovery Residences, said Monday during the panel’s first meeting at the state Capitol.
