Okefenokee formally nominated to UNESCO World Heritage List

Taylor Cooper reports, last week the U.S. Department of the Interior announced it will nominate the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge to join the UNESCO World Heritage List. “The United States is home to some of Earth’s most incredible natural wonders, and today, the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge takes an important step toward joining the ranks of the world’s most cherished treasures,” Secretary Deb Haaland said on Dec. 20

What to know about metro Atlanta’s job gains in November

Scott Trubey reports that Metro Atlanta added jobs in retail, transportation and health care in November, but the jobless rate remained steady at 3.5%, according to the Georgia Department of Labor. The Labor Department said the Atlanta area gained 9,600 jobs last month, what the department called a record-breaking tally, but the figures are not seasonally adjusted as monthly statewide figures are.

Brunswick tech startup spreading its wings

Dave Williams reports that a tech startup business launched in Coastal Georgia is about to expand to Atlanta and Dallas. GAGE, a web platform designed for service workers to show their credentials and skills to potential employers, already is operating a pilot program in Dallas and soon will move into Atlanta, a tech hub that’s a natural fit for the company.

This Georgia school district is one of few in the U.S. with a 100% clean energy bus fleet

Margaret Walker reports, the Wilkes County School District announced last week that it’s the first in Georgia to have all of its daily bus routes served by electric and propane buses instead of diesel buses. In a news release from communications consultants Sugarcane Strategies, the organization said Wilkes County was one of the few nationwide to transition to fully clean fixed-route buses, according to the release.

Rome To Break Ground On Water Filtration Facility In 2025

David Crowder reports that Rome plans to break ground on a new water treatment facility on Riverside Parkway in 2025 that will remove chemical pollutants from Rome’s drinking water supply. Settlement funds from a lawsuit filed by the city against carpet manufacturers, chemical companies and others will pay for the facility that will remove PFAS and other chemicals from the local water supply.

Georgia Rivers Releases River Adventure Schedule for 2025

Staff reports that a slate of 14 guided canoe and kayak trips, ranging from explorations of the blackwater Okefenokee Swamp in South Georgia to whitewater thrills on the Chattahoochee River in North Georgia are on tap in 2025 from Georgia Rivers, the Peach State’s only statewide organization dedicated to protecting Georgia’s rivers, streams and lakes.

New legislation will provide relief to Georgia farmers hit by Hurricane Helene

Melissa Cruz reports that Georgia farmers devastated by Hurricane Helene will soon be eligible for relief, thanks to the passage of a bill that set aside $21 billion for agricultural disaster funding. The bill, which passed on a bipartisan vote Saturday night, also includes $10 billion in economic aid for farmers who labored under difficult market conditions, rising costs, and cheap imports for the last several years.
