Nonprofit diaper supplier delivered moms desperately needed aid after Hurricane Helene
Jill Nolin reports that Clinch County had been without electricity and water for several days after Hurricane Helene tore through the state when a large van rolled up at the local hospital with a stockpile of diapers on board. The haul of baby supplies was in response to a call for help that Angela Handley, CEO of Clinch Memorial Hospital, put out on social media when it seemed to her that the rest of Georgia was unaware of how badly her community was struggling.

Walens Family Commits $4M to KSU Athletics
Staff reports that longtime Kennesaw State University supporters Dave and Donna Walens have pledged a $4 million contribution to KSU Athletics. The Walens’ gift propels KSU to having secured $28.2 million of $30 million necessary for the Athletics Capital Campaign, which is a prominent component of the $200 million Campaign for KSU.

Jobless rate for Valdosta slips slightly
Staff reports that the Azalea City’s jobless rate slipped a bit in September, according to statistics. Valdosta had an unemployment rate of 3.6% in September, down one-tenth of a percent since August, a Georgia Department of Labor statement said. A year ago, the rate was 3.4%.

Cumberland Inlet developer Jacoby skirts foreclosure notice
Maggie Lee reports that the public agency that wants to see redevelopment at St. Marys’ old Gilman Paper site had a “nerve-wracking” few days this fall when the private developer there faltered on a $736,000 payment. The Camden County Joint Development Authority voted on Sept. 30 to pursue foreclosure if necessary against JDI Cumberland Inlet LLC — a development partnership mostly owned by Atlanta developer Jim Jacoby’s Jacoby Development.

Georgia scientists look to seagrass for climate solutions
Emily Jones reports, the world’s oceans absorb nearly a third of global carbon dioxide emissions. Seagrass beds, in particular, are carbon-storing powerhouses. While less than 1% of the seafloor is made up of seagrass beds, those beds store about 11% of the ocean’s buried carbon, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
