Miguel Legoas reports that mre than 1,200 different organizations were included by Forbes on America’s Best-In-State Employers list. Which were the best in Georgia? Delta Air Lines holds the crown of best employer overall and is the only one of the top five that is based in Georgia.

Where Georgia Power plans to install massive batteries next
Drew Kann reports that Georgia Power, the state’s largest utility, has revealed details about where it will install its next set of massive batteries, part of its plan to meeting a wave of electricity demand the company says is on the horizon. In a filing submitted last week to regulators at the Georgia Public Service Commission, the company disclosed that it will build 500 megawatts of new battery energy storage systems, also known as BESS, at four locations in the state.

22 acres of green space near Chattahoochee River to receive multi-million dollar upgrades
Staff reports that one of the parks that has long been a hidden jewel in the metro Atlanta area is about to get a multi-million dollar upgrade. Kim Menefee is the Executive Director of the Cumberland Community Improvement District. The organization helps lead the charge on what will be a more than $15 million effort to improve and renew 22 acres of green space near the river.

Obamas, Airbnb CEO award public service scholarships to 5 college students from Georgia
Meimei Xu reports that five college juniors from Georgia received a public service scholarship created by the Obama Foundation and Airbnb Co-Founder and CEO Brian Chesky. Among the 100 recipients of the scholarship were Stanford University student Esther Ceballo Ortiz from Fayetteville; University of Alabama at Birmingham student Wajiha Mekki from Lawrenceville; Georgia State University Lucero Mendez from Snellville; Vanderbilt University student Samantha Mitike from Duluth; and Duke University student Henry Stephens IV from Grovetown.

New developments are on the rise in the northern end of Bryan County
Latrice Williams reports, there was a time when people moved to quiet and sleepy Pembroke, Ga. because they were seeking a small town where the daily pace was set by the railroad running through downtown. With several developments now coming online, townsfolk will have to adjust to a new normal. Pembroke City Council approved the rezoning and annexation of 227 acres for a proposed development of 2,000 homes Aug. 12.

Tunnel to Towers Foundation
Candice Dyer reports that on 9/11, Brooklyn firefighter Stephen Siller was off duty but heard the World Trade Center was under attack. So he returned to Squad 1 to get his gear and then drove toward the Twin Towers. When he reached the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel, it was closed, so he donned his gear and ran to the towers. He died when the towers fell, and his body was never recovered.

Georgia educators rolling out literacy improvement steps

Now, it’s time to implement legislation the General Assembly passed last year aimed at improving the quality of early reading instruction, Amy Denty, the DOE’s literacy director, told members of the Georgia Council on Literacy Monday.

Top NCAA women swimmers tell Georgia lawmakers allowing trans athletes in their events is unfair
Ross Williams reports, how to keep transgender women out of sports competitions is once again the topic of discussion under Georgia’s Gold Dome as state senators convened a meeting of a new special committee on protecting women’s sports Tuesday. The hearing featured a group of college swimmers who say they were put at an unfair disadvantage by being made to compete against a transgender athlete.

With time short, South Georgia gets lots of love

A couple of weeks ago, Charles Hayslett suggested on his Trouble in God’s Country blog that with high school football ramping up, Walz might consider rounding up some of the members of the 1999 Mankato West team that won their state championship and doing a bus tour across South Georgia, possibly ending in Blackshear, home of Stetson Bennett and the current 2A state champion team.
