Staff reports that more than 80 percent of first responders experience traumatic events while on the job and in DeKalb County there is a peer support program encouraging them to share their experiences and connecting them with additional mental health and addiction resources. DeKalb’s own Fire Captain Chuck Bray will embark on a 190 mile, 14-day walk across England to spread awareness of DeKalb’s successful peer support program for public safety officials and encourage public safety officials to get the treatment they need.

Monroe County officials want library to move LGBTQ books or lose money. Community responds
Myracle Lewis reports that a Monroe County commissioner says he wants to defund the Monroe County Library if it doesn’t move LGBTQ+ themed books out of its children and young adult sections, and the issue prompted about 100 people to show up at the county’s commission meeting last week. District 3 Commissioner John Ambrose told The Telegraph he is willing to defund the public library in early 2025 if the books aren’t moved by the time new county chairman-elect Alan Gibbs takes office, who supports the notion.

Early voting begins Sept. 9 for Sapelo election
Mary Landers reports that McIntosh County residents are scheduled to head to the polls Oct. 1 to vote on a single issue. Democrats Sue Georgia Election Board, Warning of ‘Chaos’
Nick Corasaniti reports, Democrats sued the Georgia state election board on Monday, arguing that measures approved by the board this month seeking to alter the election certification process in the state were illegal and could create chaos on Election Day. The lawsuit claims that the board intended to give local election officials a broad license to “hunt for purported election irregularities of any kind, potentially delaying certification and displacing longstanding (and court-supervised) processes for addressing fraud.”

Judge says four independent and third-party presidential candidates should not be on Georgia ballot
Jill Nolin reports that three independent and third-party presidential candidates were dealt a setback in their quest to appear on the ballot in Georgia this November. A state administrative law judge ruled Monday afternoon that the candidates or their electors were not eligible under Georgia law. Those decisions are not final, though.

Brian Kemp sought advice Monday from the state attorney general regarding calls to remove three GOP members of the State Election Board for approving late changes to state elections laws. Georgia’s presidential ballot may shrink. It’s a win for Democrats
Adam Van Bimmer, Tia Mitchell, Patricia Murphy and Adam Van Brimmer report that at one point, it looked like Georgia’s presidential ballot would have seven people on it. After Monday, that could be down to just three. Chief Judge Michael Malihi of the Georgia Office of State Administrative Hearings recommended four candidates — socialist Claudia De la Cruz, Georgia Green Party nominee Jill Stein as well as independents Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Cornel West — should all not appear on the ballot for various reasons, the AJC’s Caleb Groves reports.
