Tropical system aims toward Georgia as state awaits first cyclone of the hurricane season

Benjamin Payne reports, the first tropical disturbance of 2024 to include Georgia in its possible trajectory has materialized in the Atlantic Ocean, which federal forecasters said Tuesday has a 60% chance of forming into a tropical depression, tropical storm or hurricane within seven days.

Hyundai pursues adding hybrid car production to Georgia EV plant

Zachary Hansen, Adam Van Brimmer and Drew Kann report that electric vehicles may not be the only cars coming off assembly lines at Hyundai Motor Group’s sprawling factory near Savannah. The Korean automaker recently asked state environmental regulators to amend permits to allow for gasoline storage and fuel filling equipment at the 3,000-acre factory site in Bryan County, documents obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution show.

Georgia Ports marks slight decline in container volumes; achieves record RoRo volumes

Staff reports, at he Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) Board meeting, President and CEO Griff Lynch reported GPA handled 5.25 million twenty-foot equivalent container units in fiscal year 2024, which ended June 30, 2024. The performance constitutes a decrease of 2.3 percent or 123,000 TEUs compared to the previous year.

‘Low-intensity’ residential growth biggest threat to Georgia farming

Dave Williams reports that single-family residential subdivisions built on large lots are gobbling up Georgia’s farmland at an alarming rate, the head of a nonprofit land preservation group said Tuesday. The Peach State lost about 2.6 million acres of farmland and 2 million acres of forest between 1974 and 2016, Katherine Moore, president of the Georgia Conservancy, told members of a state Senate study committee meeting on the campus of Georgia Southern University in Statesboro.
