Georgia Ports welcomes MANA Nutrition’s new food processing facility

Staff reports that MANA Nutrition leaders and employees hosted a groundbreaking ceremony July 17, 2024, to commemorate an important new addition to the company’s supply chain. The 320,000 square-foot warehouse in Pooler, Ga., is four miles from the Port of Savannah and will enable the company to double its current production while adding new storage capacity.

Athens officials look to use ARPA funds for workforce initiatives, ‘impact businesses’, more

Jim Thompson reports, Athens-Clarke County commissioners recently were briefed on a draft proposal calling for a $1.2 million outlay of federal dollars for local economic development programming. The Business Development and Workforce Support Task Force, co-chaired by Commissioners Carol Myers and Tiffany Taylor, is proposing to use the funding for seven initiatives.

Cave Spring to Hold Solar Farm Q&A on Monday

Diane Wagner reports that the Cave Spring City Council will hold a special called meeting Monday, primarily to hear from a Georgia Power Co. representative about solar farms. Connecticut-based TRC would have a 25-year lease on the property and representatives have been talking to the council about the site plan, technology, access road, erosion control, buffer, grading, and the extension of the project.

Feds tell state to review impact of Hyundai wells on protected fish

John Deem reports, add endangered fish to the list of concerns about wells that would supply up to 6.6 million gallons of water per day for Hyundai Motor Company’s electric vehicle and battery manufacturing complex in Bryan County. In a March 8 letter, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries division directed the Georgia Environmental Protection Division to consider the impact of withdrawals from the Floridan Aquifer on two species of federally protected sturgeon.

Governor Kemp’s Next International Mission: Italy

Mike Rounds, R-South Dakota and Kevin Cramer, R-North Dakota., in introducing the Gold Star Children Education Act to support the eduction of children after the loss of a parent who has served.

Public Service Commission to take up plan to add new fossil fuels to energy mix

Dave Williams reports that Georgia energy regulators already have approved a request by Georgia Power for a significant increase in electrical generating capacity to meet the needs of a growing state. But the state Public Service Commission (PSC) still must sign off on a key component of the Atlanta-based utility’s plan: a proposal to build three new “dual-fuel” turbines at Plant Yates near Newnan.

Government watchdog sues Georgia election board charging GOP faction violated meeting laws

Stanley Dunlap reports that a government watchdog organization is accusing the Georgia State Election Board of violating the Georgia Open Meetings Act by holding a meeting on short notice to advance election rule changes ahead of the Nov. 5 election. American Oversight filed a lawsuit Friday in Fulton County Superior Court accusing conservative appointed election board members Rick Jeffares, Janice Johnston, and Janelle King of failing to provide timely public notice for a July 12 meeting, not having enough board members present to conduct business and violating several other the board’s rules.

EXCLUSIVE: New AJC poll finds Trump leads Harris in Georgia matchup

Michelle Baruchman, Tia Mitchell and Greg Bluestein report, former President Donald Trump holds a slight lead over Vice President Kamala Harris in Georgia in an Atlanta Journal-Constitution poll released Sunday, just hours after President Joe Biden ended his presidential campaign. The poll of likely Georgia voters, which was conducted before Biden dropped out of the contest and endorsed his vice president, shows Trump leading Harris 51% to 46% in a head-to-head matchup, just outside the margin of error of 3.1 percentage points.
