State ends fiscal year with revenue uptick after months-long slide
Dave Williams reports that Georgia tax collections rose last month compared to June of last year, but the state ended fiscal 2024 with lower tax revenues than the previous year. The state brought in $3.03 billion in June, up 6.5% compared to the previous June, the Georgia Department of Revenue reported Friday.

Japanese Firm Announces New Norcross Office During Gwinnett Mission
Trevor Williams reports that a Japanese manufacturer of machines for coatings confirmed that it would open its first U.S. office in Gwinnett as a delegation from the county visited its headquarters in Nara. Hirano Tecseed Co. Ltd., whose machines are used in industries from displays and electronics to adhesive tape and wallpaper, will put a new outpost employing three people in Norcross, according to a Partnership Gwinnett news release.

Agriculture Moves Beyond the Earth
Mary Ann Dunkin reports, Georgia’s high-tech greenhouses and vertical hydroponic farms are a growing alternative to traditional farming of crops like greens, herbs, tomatoes and mushrooms. Although Grant Anderson’s operation is one of just a few Georgia farms to grow produce in shipping containers, it is among a number that raise crops in enclosures – be it high-tech greenhouses or vertical farms – using a practice known as controlled environment agriculture (CEA).

Federal lawmakers from Georgia file legislation to fund Atlanta water system upgrades
Staff reports that a group of Georgia’s federal lawmakers have introduced legislation in U.S. Congress to get Atlanta the funds it needs to upgrade its water infrastructure and facilities. The legislation comes in response to the water main crisis in June, when thousands of Atlantans went without water for several days as a series of water main breaks caused disruptions to traffic, utilities and even events in the city.

String of environmental violations raises concerns about firm linked to Okefenokee mine project
Dylan Jackson and Drew Kann report, in October 2019, state authorities received a call from a farmer in northeast Georgia who reported a creek running through his land had turned pitch black. Investigators soon traced the source of pollution to a nearby power plant in Franklin County, where workers had spent days spraying more than 1 million gallons of water on a smoldering wood fuel pile to prevent a fire, state records show.
