VW’s $5B Rivian investment could help support Georgia electric vehicle plant

Zachary Hansen reports that electric vehicle startup Rivian and German automobile giant Volkswagen Group announced Tuesday a joint venture to develop EV software technologies, a potential $5 billion partnership that Rivian said will provide the company the capital it needs to grow and launch its planned Georgia factory. The deal is a financial boost for Rivian, a company that has delivered award-winning high-performance EVs, but has struggled with supply chain issues and seen its cash pile shrink.

Jill Nolin reports, prominent former elected officials in Georgia from both sides of the aisle are banding together to launch a new group focused on restoring trust in democracy and defending the state election system. The Democracy Defense Project, which was announced Tuesday, will consist of some former heavy hitters in Georgia politics: former Republican Gov. Nathan Deal, former Democratic Gov. Roy Barnes, former Republican U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss and former Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin, who is a Democrat.

Sen. Jon Ossoff asks for federal probe after court mail goes undelivered in Fulton County

Chamian Cruz reports, U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff is calling on the U.S. Postal Service Inspector General to investigate the months-long mail delivery problems in Georgia. On Tuesday, Ossoff joined Fulton County Clerk of Courts Ché Alexander on the steps of Fulton County Superior Court, where they stood next to several bins they said were full of returned mail.

U.S. Supreme Court upholds statewide PSC elections in Ga.

Dave Williams reports that the U.S. Supreme Court has declined to hear an appeal in a lawsuit challenging the way Georgia elects members of the state Public Service Commission (PSC). The court’s decision not to take up the case, issued on Monday, means members of the PSC will continue to be elected statewide under a new schedule adopted by the General Assembly this year.

AJC poll: Young voters not happy with their presidential choices

Michelle Baruchman reports, more than a dozen people younger than 30 who were interviewed Tuesday by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution said they’re not enthusiastic about the prospect of either the Democratic candidate, President Joe Biden, or the Republican candidate, former President Donald Trump, as our nation’s next president. Most said they will make their decision based on who seems least harmful, but several remained open to a third-party candidate.
