Developers chosen to give old Georgia Dome site a mixed-use makeover
Zachary Hansen reports that the development team behind The Battery in Cobb County has been selected to build an entertainment district on the 11-acre lawn in the shadow of Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The Georgia World Congress Center Authority (GWCCA) placed a public call in April seeking developers to reimagine land that was once home to the Georgia Dome and is currently known as the Home Depot Backyard in downtown Atlanta.

Governor announces in-depth assessment of Georgia Department of Corrections system

Brian Kemp announced an in-depth assessment of the state’s Department of Corrections system. The governor made this announcement alongside the Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) as part of its latest measure to improve public safety in the state.

Macon transit buses will go all-electric by 2030. What will it do for the city?
Ava Chatlosh reports that the Macon Transit Authority is working to achieve a fully electric bus fleet by 2030. So far, MTA has four electric fixed-route buses in service, and it is slowly integrating six electric ParaTransit buses and four electric MicroTransit buses into its fleet.

Homebuilder seeks state-waters variance for Columbia County project
Joe Hotchkiss reports that a Columbia County developer is planning a rural home neighborhood near Thurmond Lake with each lot covering several acres. Running through the middle of the property is a small tributary of Cliatt Creek. Building roads around the stream would create longer cul-de-sacs whose construction could potentially affect the environment, according to the developer’s zoning variance request.

Plan to allow Athens communities to fund, build speed humps moves forward to commission
Jim Thompson reports that a proposed residential traffic management program that would allow Athens-Clarke County neighborhoods to fund their own traffic infrastructure improvements is on its way to the full Athens-Clarke County Commission for review and possible action. The commission’s Legislative Review Committee completed work on the proposal at its June 12 meeting and voted to send it forward to the full commission.

More than 100 tortoises were removed from burrows at Hyundai site ahead of construction
John Deem reports, construction of Hyundai Motor Company’s $7.6 million electric-vehicle manufacturing plant near Savannah has made national headlines and upended the lives of residents in northern Bryan County. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers document noted that gopher tortoises living on what was then still fields and forests had been removed from the site in coordination with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Georgia Wildlife Resources Division.

A majority Black audience of several thousand people packed into a downtown Atlanta Hyatt Regency ballroom to participate in a half-hour conversation with Harris while she’s on the latest leg of her so-called national Economic Opportunity Tour.

PG A.M.: Kemp courts more Korean investment during 10-day trade mission
Greg Bluestein, Tia Mitchell, Patricia Murphy and Adam Van Brimmer report that Gov. Brian Kemp has long warned that the window for mega-developments in Georgia’s surging green energy industry may be tightening. But he said he’s determined to squeeze everything he can out of it. “We’re keeping our foot on the gas,” he said in an interview in South Korea, right after meeting with an undisclosed “hot prospect.”
