Georgia Ports Authority Hosts King and Queen of The Netherlands
Staff reports that Georgia Ports Authority President and CEO Griff Lynch welcomed His Majesty King Willem-Alexander and Her Majesty Queen Máxima of The Netherlands to the Port of Savannah Tuesday afternoon as part of the Dutch Royal Couple’s three-day working visit to the United States. The GPA hosted a tour of America’s third busiest gateway container port, and roundtable discussions with Dutch industry and business leaders, as well as government officials on Sustainable Port Development and Hinterland Connectivity.

City officials consider $5M aid for businesses’ water main break losses
Mirtha Donastorg reports that by the end of July, Atlanta businesses impacted by the two water main breaks that upended the city for days may see thousands of dollars from the city start to hit their bank accounts, officials said at a City Council committee meeting Tuesday. Mayor Andre Dickens announced last week the city would set up a $5 million fund to help the affected businesses.

Watkinsville earns an ‘All-American City’ award in Colorado

Albany State to get interim president next month
Dave Williams reports that University System of Georgia Chancellor Sonny Perdue has named a former interim president at a historically Black university in Florida to serve as interim president at Albany State University. Lawrence Drake II will succeed current Albany State President Marion Ross Fedrick on July 1, when she leaves to become executive vice president and chief of staff to the president of Georgia State University.

Whitfield County commissioners look to reduce costs for some residential developments
Charles Oliver reports that the Whitfield County Board of Commissioners Monday held the first reading of two ordinances that seek to cut red tape and costs for some residential developments. The first would create a definition of a minor subdivision as a “subdivision of five or fewer lots, which does not require the construction of a new road for the purpose of lawful access.”

Georgia-based hate and extremist groups double, says Southern Poverty Law Center report
Maya Homan reports that hate and extremism in Georgia was on the rise in 2023, according to the results of an annual report released this week by the Southern Poverty Law Center that tracks extremist groups across the U.S. In Georgia, that number has grown to nearly 50 organizations, more than double the number of groups tracked across the state in 2022.

Former President Donald Trump’s comeback bid is working to catch up. The Republican’s voter mobilization effort, “Trump Force 47,” is entering a new phase this week as the campaign trains volunteers and opens offices in hot spots around the state, including outposts in Fayette and Gwinnett counties.
